BOROUGH OF ST. KILDA.

MEETING OF COUNCIL The fortnightly meeting cf the Bt. Kilda Borough Council was held Inst evening, and was attended bv Iho flavor (Mr R. W. Hall) iijiid Crs J. Beattie, H. H. Lenrv, ■J. Fleming, T. D. B. Boy, C. Conn, U. Tolfer, Ct. ttluc, F. 0. Gillam. W. (.?, Baird, and A. Bniilcy. BRIGHTON DOMAIN LEVY. A letter was received from (he Lands Department, advising that Mr J. K. Bartholomew, S.M., hud been .appointed as a commission to inquire into the proposed apportionment of expenditure in connection with the Brighton Domain Board.— Mr Bartholomew wrote notifying that the inquiry in question would be bold in the Magistrate’s Court, Dunedio, on Friday next. —It was decided that a committee consisting of the Mayor, Cr Beattie, and Cr Telfer be appointed to frame and bring before the commission the council’.objections to contributing towards expenditure on the Brighton Domain, and it was also agreed that the borough's solicitors '(Messrs Lallan and Gallaway) be asked to ad. in conjunction-with the committee. BARKING OF CARS. Cr Smiley asked if something could not be done to prevent motorists from parking unlighted ears all night on the streets of the borough. He had received several complaints from householders in regard to this matter, and he did not think if fair that some motorists should so use the streets, and thus evade the responsibility of providing a parage. He thought that the council should take action against motorists offending in this direction, and would move accordingly. —Cr Roy seconded the motion, which was curried. STREET RECONSTRUCTION; Cr Leary referred to the fact that some months previously tenders were called for the tar-sealing of certain streets in the borough, but the tenders which were received were rejected, as they were nigher than the foreman’s estimated cost for the work. He would like to know if these streets had yet been completed, and if so wh'at they had cost.—-It was decided that the town clerk be asked to supply the necessary information at the next meeting. WATER CONSUMPTION. It was reported that the water consumption for the fortnight ended yesterday had been 4,707,000 gallons at a cost of £ll7 13a 6d, compared with £125 Is 6d for the previous two weeks. FOREMAN’S REPORT. The foreman (Mr A. Douglas) reported as follows on the work done in the borough during the fortnight ended August 14:— 'The following roads have been patched; —Bay View road, Bowen street, Victoria road, and Richardson street. Asphalting has been carried on in Bay View road where the water main was laid down, also a small part of Royal crescent. Two concrete crossings have been laid down, two pipes through the footways, and men have been employed in making concrete blocks and mixing asphalt. Other work includes the removing of grass from the sides of Richardson street, cleaning up Anderson’s Bay road, cleaning channels in Begg, Eskvale, High, and Grove street,-, and laying metal on Gourley and Montreal streets. Returned soldiers worked on grass plots in Bird, Dalgety, Quarry, and Normanby streets. For the coming fortnight it is proposed to carry out the following work;—Finish patching Victox;ia road and a small part of Queen’s drive. Patch footpath jn Council, Caldcr, part of Princes streets, and part of Forbury crescent. Plunket street and Corunna street will be built up where necessary with rotten rock. Channels will be cleaned out in the St. Clair end of the borough. -Other work includes top-dress-ing footpaths in part of High street, Plunket street, and part Forbury crescent, building up footpath in Ranfurly street, and asphalting it, and removing grass from the sides of Richardson street. Returned soldiers will be employed in forming grass plots in Bird, Dalgety, Princes, Bowen, and Islington streets. The report was adopted. FINANCE. Accounts amounting to £354 11s were passed for payment. The. chairman of the Finance Committee (Cr Leary) reported that the credit balance at the previous meeting was £994 Os 4d, so that at date there was a credit balance of £639 9s 4d.
