MAXWELL CUP COMPETITION. CHRISTIAN BROTHERS AND CITY LEADING. The ■n-cathor was decidedly unpleasant tor football on Saturday afternoon. The grounds were in good condition, but shortly before the senior games started a cold rain set in, with a strong southerly wind behind it. Under the conditions it was hard to play good football, but the players made the most of it. and, on tlie whole, the games were full of interest, though in every case the winning team had a substantial majority as far as points were concerned. The match between City and Kaikorai played on the Caledonian Ground, ' , C 'V was in good condition. Eckhoff failed with a difficult kick. City kept up the pressure, and another passing bout enabled Clydesdale to score behind the posts. M'Cabe’s kick added two points to the try. Kaikorai then got to the City twenty-five, but they were soon busy on defence again. Clydesdale got over the dine behind the posts, but the referee ordered a scrum five yards out. City got the ball, and Jack scored near the posts. B. Eckhoff failed with the kick. At this stage heavy rain made matters very unpleasant for all concerned. Another attack by City was brought to a successful issue by Crawford, who scored behind the posts. M'Cabe bad no difficulty in kicking a goal. City still kept up the pressure, but one chance of scoring utia spoiled by a kuock-on, while another was frustrated by determined tackling. Just as the bell rang for half time B. Eckhoff started a nice passing movement, which enabled Hunter to score behind the posts. Crawford’s kick was a failure, and the spell ended with City leading by 29 points to nil. .

Early in the second spell City attacked, and B. Eckhoff scored, but failed with the kick at goal. Kaikorai then rushed play to the other cud, but in a race for the ball Cameron won and saved the situation for City. A clever passing bout by Clark. Clydesdale, and L. Eckhoff transferred play to the other end, but Kaikorai immediately returned to the attack. Clev.er work by-Mackay and Watson was spoiled by Mayne knocking on. City, forced down, and for some time play was in the vicinity of halfway- fiicks suddenly intercepteda pass, and after making a great run from near raid-field he scored in a fairly good position. Mayne converted with a nice kick. City’s nest attack ended in a forcedown, but just afterwards B. Eck hoff made a pretty run agd then transferred to Williams, who scored near tb, posts. Clydesdale kicked a goal. After some open play, City forced Kaikorai back on defence, but in a flash the tables were turned. Jlackey got the ball in his own twenty-five, and made the best run of the day, and probably the best of the season He dodged several opponents, and heat others by dummying, ending up a brilliant effort by scoring near the posts. Cameron made a valiant effort to check him, but he was over the line before he was brought down. Hicks converted Soon afterwards L, Eckhoff got the ball, and after running from halfway he passed to Hunter inside the Kaikorai twentyfive, the latter scoring behind the" posts Jack kicked a goaf, and-brought City’s score up to 42,points. In the course of a passing bout the ball went from Crawford to Clydesdale, then to L. Eckhoff, and back to Crawford* who scored in a fairly good position. Cameron's kick at goal was a failure. Towardes the finish Jack scored a try, which L. Eckhoff failed to convert. Just on time, Campbell added anoMier try to Kaikorai’s list, after covering half the length of the field. The scorer kicked a goal, and the game ended: Kaikorai 15 points. The game was controlled by Mr Percy.

CHRISTIAN BROTHERS v. KAITANGATA. The match between Christian Brothers and Kaitangata was played on Chisholm Park on Saturday afternoon. The sandv ground was in fair condition, but rain set in about halfway through the first spell, and made things unpleasant for players and spectators alike, A very willing game resulted, the outstanding players for Christian Brothers being O’Malley and Pollock and for Kaitangata Haylo and Gadsby, These two latter on several occasions were responsible for blockin'' the strong attack of the Christian Blethers, though the whole Kaitangata team rallied gallantly 'to the defence against a combination far superior to their own.

Christian Brothers kicked off, playing towards the oast, and Kaitangata iiumediately, became aggressive, but failed to make much headway. The Brothers came on wi'th a determined rush, which carried the ball to Kaitangata’s line, and Scoles got over, O’Connor converted. Christian Brothers 5,- .Kaitangata nil. Kaitangata again attacked strongly, and a forward rush took the ball to the Brothers’ line and Crook scored a try. Kale’s kick was unsuccessful Christian Brothers 5, Kai. taugata 3. A clever run and pass by Woodhouse to Holloway lot the latter away and he scored cleanly. O’Connor’s kick failed. Christian Brothers 8, Kai tangata ,3.
