BASIC WAGE IN CITIES. ALTERATIONS ANNOUNCED. (United Press Association.) * (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) MELBOURNE, July 27. An increase of 6d per week in the basic wage in Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth, and a decrease of Od in Sydney and Hobart, and areduction of Is in Brisbane is revealed by the figures compiled by the Trades Hall Research Information Bureau. The new rates come into operation ou August 10. MASKED MAN WITH REVOLVER.
SEVERAL PEOPLE HELD UP.
MELBOURNE, July 27. (‘Received July 28, at 5.5 p.m.) Five eases of people being held up at the revolver point have been reported to the police during the night, but no arrests have been effected. In most cases the victims were car drivers, and a masked man, upon obtaining a lift, presented a revolver and demanded money.LEADING JOCKEY KILLED. FALL IN HURDLE RACK” MELBOURNE, July 28., (Received July.2B, at 5.5 p.m.) ■ Cairns, one a of the best known jockeys in Australia and New Zealand, was fatally injured when his mount, Quick Deal, fell in the Gellibrand Hurdles at Moonee Valley yesterday. The horse somersaulted at the last fence, his hindquarters crashing on the rider, whose skull was badly fractured.
