BIG FIRE IN CHINA
THOUSANDS HOMELESS. A NUMBER OF FATALITIES. ; (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright ) SHANGHAI, May 0. (Received May 7, at 1.30 a.m.) A serious fire broke out in Hanchow yesterday, resulting in the complete destruction of more than 500 buildings. The aamage is estimated at several million ' dollars, and thousands are homeless.. Several of the most important buildings were destroyed, including schools, a hospital, temples, a number of ancient landmarks, pagodas, and a former Manchu palace. Thousands of Chinese stampeded, resulting in a number of fatalities. The total number of lives lost is not known at present.;—Australian Press Association.
