RACING NEWS. FIXTURES. May 9, 11.—Egmont R.C., May 16, 18.—Wanganui J.C. May 25.—Ashburton R.C. June 1, 3,—Otaki Maori R.C. June 1,3, s.—Dunedin J.C. June 1,3, s.—Auckland R.C. June 20, 22.—South Canterbury J.C. By Sentinel. There is an old saying and a very true One that old heads cannot be placed on young shoulders. Some of the runners at Oamaru might have made a much better showing with more experienced pilots on top. The Day Comet mare Evening was on sale at 200gns at the Oamaru March meeting and has since won four races. Evening was got by Day Comet from Week-end, by Holiday House, and is also the dam of Economist rind Frivol. Goldtown set a solid pace in the Pacific Hurdles, but Troilus had his measure before reaching the last hurdle, Antrim Boy ran a fair race over hurdles at Oamaru, and .should benefit by the experience. Te Maui did not seem to have sufficient pace _ to go with the opposition in the Pacific Hurdles. Pink Coat is. wintering well and is receiving just sufficient exercise to keep him in good order. E. J. Ellis informed the writer at Oamaru that the colt is furnishing out in pleasing style. The Clarenceux gelding Glenrowan, who has been shaping promisingly on the track at Wingatqi, got cut out at the start of the Tpial Stakes at Oamaru. Meitui paid a fairly good price at Oamaru, but this was probably due to a good deal of money being shut out of the totalisator. . The Oamaru winter meeting was the best held in the “ White City ” for some years past. The change in the lay out of the course seems to have brought about a pleasing change of luck in the fortunes of the club. Best Policy ran a fair race in the Trial Stakes and was just beaten for second mOpey. He was saddled up again, but on this occasion did not get near the money. Judging by the time put up in the Oamaru Winter Cup, Royal Saxon would have just about won with a clear run. He had 71b less to carry than in the Farewell Handicap, which he won well in 1.28, and he would have gone, faster than 2.10. Money Mine was also unlucky and he also would have more seriously troubled the winner with a better njn. Amor seems to have temporarily lost form and finished well back in his race at Oamaru. Wingatui ran wide when leaving the straight in her race at Oamaru. She afterwards went back when up with the leaders five furlongs from homeA mile and a-quarter again proved too far for Gay Sonnet when racing at the Oamaru meeting. Tardy did not seem able to gallop when running in the principal race at Oaiqaru. Arrowmir showed plenty of pace ip the Flying Handicap at oam4 r n» but dropped back a fuplopg 'from home. TROTTING. FIXTURES. May 9, U-—Forhury Park T.C. May 18,—Oamaru T-U June, I 3.—Hawke’s Buy T.C. June 1, 3. —Canterbury Park T-O, June 4.— Ashburton T-O June 22, 24. — Auckland T.C. By Sentinel ' Nominations for the Oamaru winter meeting are due to-day. Everything is set fair for the Fbrbufy Park meeting this week, and already horses from Canterbury and Southland stables have started to arrive. Kreisler and Trimmer, two of D. Bennett’s team, were sent over two miles on the ‘Forbury Park track during the weekend, and both showed that they are jp fine condition. Slump is an improved pacer who will probably go to a better mark. He was brought up from the south on Saturday morning and is being worked on the local track. Suncrots was unlucky in being so badly left in his race at Oamaru on Saturday He made up so much of the lost ground that it looked as though he would have troubled the winner if he had gone away correctly. . Free Advice is the ruling favourite for the big race at Fbrbnry Park on Thursday. _ Wild Bingen stopped a long way from home in bis race at Oamaru after having every chance, \ being • out in front on the -rajls. Le Todd continues to do good work, and his steadiness and stamina should find him taking part in the finish of the big trotters’ race oh Thursday. Willie Wilkes carries an improved appearance, and is doing well in his work at Forbury Park. Lady Zita has arrived from the soqtb, and she has been striding out well on tha tracks. Jack did not fill his straps at tno start of the harness race at Oamaru on Saturday, and he never got near the leaders. He is a smart pacer who is capable of adding to the win he recorded at Riverton. OAMARU -. JOCKEY CLUB. A SUCCESSFUL MEETING. The Oamaru Jockey Club held its ■winter meeting in fine weather, and there was a 13-rge attendance, including visitor from Christchurch and a fair-sized cot> tingent' froni Dunedin. The track provided good going, but was rather on tfie soft side along the back stretch. The card produced some verjr interesting racing, and Mr A. D. MTvor got the fields away from" an excellent line,* Troihis started a sound favohrite for the Pacific Hurdles, and justified the com fidence by winning, although he was kept busy ip the run home. r_ Mfitui wae prominent all the way in the Trial Stakes, but she had nothing much to spare at the finish. A good deal of money wae shut out .on this race owing to the dilatoriness of intending investors. The Winter Cup Handicap saw Evening start a slightly better favourite than Royal - Saxon in a fairly good batting race ; Money Mine was chopped out when leaving the straight, and was sent back into the ruck. Royal Saxon got into trouble between the six and five-furlonj? posts, either through getting on some other horse’s heels or suffering interference. He stumbled and lost ground, in addition to being unbalanced. Amor arid Wingatui also went hack so rapidly as to suggest that .they struck trouble. Meanwhile Gay Sonnet was bowling along in front of the field, and led the way round the top from Buoyant, Evening, and Martis, and approaching the home turn Money Mine had run up to the leaders. Gay Sonnet showed the way into the straight but stopped when challenged by Evening, who went or to win by nearly two lengths from Money Mine, who finished on gamely under punishment and beat Gay Sonnet. Royal Saxon wag too far back two furlongs from home, but he finally finished fourth, in front of Buoyant and Martis- Money Mine seemed to be unlucky, as with a better run he would almost have won- An Inquiry was held into the interference with Royal Saxon by Martis, but after an investigation no further action was taken in the matter. No action was taken in connection with the interference suffered by Money Mine. Royal Saxon was the nnluckiest horse in,the race. The Oamaru Trot provided a stirring finish between the placed lot. Waving Corn was elected favourite for the Flying Handicap, but Tripaway came with a good run in the straight and, racing past the favourite and First Raid, who were fighting it out, went on to win easily. Meadow Lark ran a fair race, but found three of the others too good for him at the weights. Winsome Boy’s rider lost both stirrup irons at tha jump out from the barrier. Night Effort was always in the van in the Hack Handicap, but had to be ridden out to keep clear of Miss Marco. Solgele failed to stay on after leading to the straight. Another good finish was provided by the Waikaura Trot, and after putting in a break. Routine just managed to beat Pretty Pointer. Royal Saxon proved rather too good for the opposition in the Farewell Han-

dicap, but Paper Boy would have troubled him it he had got well away at the start, inis race brought a successful meeting to a conclusion, and on all sides expressions of satisfaction were heard at the results obtained. ~Luiingthe day £13.678 10s went through tne totalisator. as against £10,475 10s at the meeting held in March last. The horse that was on the lead suddenly pulled back, dragging Davidson out of hi's sulky. Matagouri bolted and dashed into Jackie Audubon, who was being cooled out... Jackie Audubon’s driver was knocked out of bis sulky, and Jackie Audubon bolted on to Wright’s road and on to Lincoln road, towards bis stables at the Addington trotting track. This morning Glideawny, Young Blake Dahneny, and Jackie Audubon were responsible for an excellent work out aver two miles.
