CHILD ENDOWMENT. NUMBER OF OVERPAYMENTS, SYDNEY, May 4. An investigation of the Child Endowment Department discloses a large number of overpayments to claimants, amounting to £10,627. The sum of £2BO was embezzled, but the offender absconded. COASTAL STEAMER SOLD. COMING TO NEW ZEALAND. The small coastal steamer Coolebar, of 497 tons, has been sold to the Holm Shipping Company, of Wanganui, for service in the New Zealand coastal trade. , QUEENSLAND ELECTIONS. POLLING NEXT SATURDAY. BRISBANE, May 5. (Received May 6, at 0'.30 a.m.) In connection with the general elections next Saturday, 143 candidates have been nominated for 68 seats, while two Labour candidates and two Nationalists have been returned unopposed. Labour had 44 and anti-Labour 28 in the last Parliament. It is anticipated that the M'Cormack Labour Government will be returned with a reduced-majority. I ' . I
