SOUTHERN v. UNION.

The match between Southern and Union which was played on the North Ground, resulted in a victory for the Black and Whites by 20 points to 6. The game, though fairly open, was somewhat onesided. In both the forward and back divisions Southern proved superior in speed and in combination, and for the greater part of the game play was- in Maroon territory. Union kicked off from th£ Dundas street end add immediately attacked. For a time the Black and White defence • was tested until the pack, with Larking and Here in the van, transferred play to Union’s twenty-five, where, from a scrum, Todd whipped out to Wilson, who threw a long pass to Hastie, the last-named sending Strachan over near the. corner. The kick at -goal failed. Southern 3, Union nil, Elliott and Johnston broke away with the ball at their toes and went completely' through- the Southern .defence to the quarter-line, where the rush was stopped by Todd, who sent his backs away to return play to , midfield. Union came again, however, and Garden, Lumb, and Fleming were associated .in. a bright passing movement which broke down in the Southern twenty-five through faulty handling. E. Wilson secured from a scrum and initiated a hack rush which took play deep into •Maroon territory, where Todd, who was playing a sound game behind the scrum, worked the blind side neatly and, beating two of the opposition, transferred to A. Hill, who made a good opening for Inglis to score at the corner. Wilson converted. Southern 8, Union nil. No sooner was the ball in play than Todd again secured and the ball, -after going through all the backs, went to Strachan, who scored his second try. The •attempt to convert failed. Southern 11, •Union nil. Lumb, M'Cullougli, and Calder were prominent in a rush for the' Maroon rearguard, .which took the ball to Southern’s twenty-five, where an infringement resulted in, Fleming kicking a good penalty goal.. ’Southern 11, Union 3. At this stage A. Todd retired injured, and was replaced by,Burke, and shortly afterwards Wilson also went off, Bolton takipg his place in the five-eighths;line. Union went to the attack again, hut the Southern defence was sound, and play, after veering back to halfway, was centred there atthe end of the spell, the scores being: Southern 11. Union 3.

A hot attack by the Southern pack opened the second spell, and play was soon in Union territory. Time and again the Black and Whites were within striking distance, but what appeared to he two certain chances of scoring were marred by faulty handling. From a scrum near the Maroon line, Todd got the ball away to Bolton, who dived across, the kick at goal going wide. Southern 14, Union 3. A vigorous counter-attack by Union saw the ball carried deep into Southern . territory, where offside play gave Fleming another shot at goal, which he put over from a difficult angle. Southern

14, Union 6. ■. A back.' movement by Southern soon had-Union on'the defensive in their own quarter until relief came with a good line kick by Chapman. Southern fought back to within a few yards of the Maroon line, the opposition disputing every inch of the way. Attack after attack was driven back until Todd again obtained possession from a scrum and transferred to Bolton, who made a good opening for Inglia, to score wide out. The attempt to-convert was. unsuccessful. Play veered back ,to midfield and was even for a few minutes until a good punt by Hastie found the line near Union’s twenty-five. From the resulting line out; Todd got the ball, and, after jinking two opponents, drew the defence and sent Strachan over in a good position, the kick, at goal again failing. The whistle sounded soon afterwards, with Southern on the offensive, the final score being:—Y Southern 20 points. Union .... .'.■ ... 6 points. Mr J. Aitcheson controlled the game. TAIERI v. UNIVERSITY B. Taieri met University B at Mosgiel on Saturday afternoon, under ideal playing' conditions, the former team winning by a margin of seven points. Throughout the game the, Taieri forwards worked well, and were undoubtedly the better of the two packs. The University forwards latJied dash, and were unable to get the ball in the scrums. The Blues’ backs worked well and on several occasions were close to scoring. The winners’ score, was made up of three penalty goals, all kicked by Findlay, and a potted goal by Jolly. University scored two tries, noth of which were unconverted. Of the Taieri forwards Findlay, FinJaysop,and Jolly were the most outstanding, while A. Scott, at full-back, was responsible for some sound play. Francis, the University half-back, played a great game, but did not receive much protection, while Clouston, full-back, was disappointing. , Smith and Wallis were prominent in the three-quarters line. Harbutt, Bibby, Abel, and Allen were other Blue players who did good work. Taieri kicked off; against the sun, and attacked strongly, until the University forwards got the ball out, and*Francis set his backs in motion. After the ball had passed - through the whole back division, Smith scored well out. Wallis failed with the kick. University 3, Taieri nil. Again Smith was. sent away,, and with only the full-back to pass, slipped. The Taieri forwards were employing bustling tactics, and generally completely overran their opponents. A forward rush by the Colours ended by Findlay kicking a good goal. Taieri 3, University 3. Several promising Blue movements broke down and it was not long before the Greens were again attacking the ( Students’ goal. A series of scrums on the line followed, and at this stage at least two certain tries appeared to have been scored by the hardworking Taieri forwards. 'A force down by University relieved the position. Taieri were still attacking, and in close succession Findlay kicked two splendid goals,, both from free kicks. Taieri' 9, University 3. A few minutes later Jolly was successful with a great drop kick, which brought the Taieri score to 13. The Blue pack were improving, but lacked dash. , Play swung from one side to the other, and with Taieri out of position, the ball went from Harbutt to Bibby, wjio scored at the corner. Francis failed to -convert. Taieri 13, University 6. Half time came; with play at midfield.- : ’ The second half of the game-was again dominated by the Taieri forwards, who kept up the pace, until the. final whistle. Both teams did a lot of attacking. A free kick, put Taieri in position, and the pressure was maintained foV some time, but there was no further .score. The Students were playing a sounder - game now, the forwards in particular, while -the rearguard; were handling the' ball well. In spite of several successful back .movements, the Taieri forwards were breaking up the rushes. Shqrtly before time the Blue backs were , set in motion, and .Wallis, who was running strongly for a certain try, was thrown out. Theßlues. made several determined attempts to score, but the defence of the Taieri team was sound.. The .final whistle went, with Taieri attacking, the scores being:— Taieri ■., .. .. 13 points University B .. .. 6 points , Mr E. F. Lee acted as referee. DUNEDIN; w ZINGARIrRICHMONp. Th match at Montecillo between Dunedin and Zingari-Richmond, which was won. by Dunedin by 15 points to 3, was a very'.disappointing exhibition of football. Both.teams were extremely ragged in thtir play, and there was scarcely one fast, concerted movement throughout, the whole of the .game. As the . backs were unable ,to get into their stride, the brunt of the work Was borne by the forwards, who made up for lack of cohesion by their keenness. . The first half of the game was not .productive of' any scoring,^although on several occasions both teams narrowly missed securing. points. On the whole, the first half was very uninteresting, resolving itself into a' hard tussle between the opposing forwards, with very little open work. In. the second spell, however, the game was speeded up considerably, although there was little improvement in the team work displayed. A few minutes after the commencement of the spell a loose rush"’ by the Dunedinpack, led by-Ford, penetrated Zingari’s .defence, and Ford secured and scored, ‘the kick failing. Dunedin 3, Zingari nil. ■After a few minutes of scrambling in midfield, - she'. Dunedin forwards again came away and brought play to Zingari’s twenty-five. ' Colours/ defended strongly, but following bn a spell of hard shrugging almost on their line, Delahunty snapped "up from a scrum and dived over at‘the corner. Hayes converted:' Dunedin 8, Zingari nil. More scrambling play ensued for some time, Dunedin having the better of the struggle, and the next Score was gained for D.unedin by Lynn, who : picked up out of a ruck near Zingari’s line add crossed wide out. The try was .not converted. Dunedin 11, Zingari nil. A good rush by the Zingari pack .brought play to. Blues’ twenty-five, where the latter were penalised for an infringement. Titchener kicked a good goal, giving Zingari their first and only score. Dunedin .11, Zingari 3. Just before, the final whistle, when Dunedin were pressing the Dolours hard, Jones secured in a good position and potted, a .nice goal for Dunedin, making the final sepres;
