(Received May 3, at 9 p.m.) “God Save*the King” and “The Star-spangled Banner ” were sung at . the Aldermanic reception to the young Australians and New Zealanders at Chicago. The Mayor (Mr “ Bill ” Thompson) ' was present, and said-: “ (This is indeed a rare opportunity to welcome these . splendid young men to Chicago. lam most assuredly glad, you came to Chicago, and I am sure Chicago has impressed you with its greatness.” Mr Simons, in a witty speech, said; “We feel very close to .Mr Thompson ■- as he has such a good British name. I thought at first he was Scotch. When we were making pur plans to come to Chicago we wired to him from Aue- . tralia, and we got a long telegram in reply telling us of the sights here. A few days later we received an account for £5 as the message was sent collect. Then we were sure he was Scotch.” Mr Simons later was asked whether the Mayor had refunded the £5, when he chuckled and said "No, let’s call it square.”—Australian Press Association.'
