ETHICS IN SPORT.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— Any ordinarily intelligent person reading the letter signed John Campbell (“Tout Suite”), no address of any kind being given, would say that John Campbell is only one John Smith. My inference is quite obvious to those who’say a spade is not a shovel. Whether Mr John Campbell ceases to possess an address or not, however, I treat him as if he were genuine, and will answer his three questions fully, as follows:—(1) As stated already, a friend entered my ’girl and paid the Is entry fee, which I repaid later on; (2) I have supplied the editor with the name of the person ‘ responsible for my daughter’s entry; (3) the secretary of the Outram sports can answer for himself, as he alone is responsible to his society. As for Mr Baxter’s little “ squeaks ” he is making a great mistake when he says my girl received the prize in my presence some distance from the secretary’s tent. The fact is she received it from the secretary in his tent in the usual way. Like the monkey after the chestnut, Mr Baxter has evidently climbed a branch too high in his desire to hand out to me the coup-de-grace. Let the galled jade wince, my withers are unwrurig. In any case, what on earth would it matter where my girl received her prize? Obviously, Mr Baxter must be desperate for something to write about.—l am, etc., IT. M. Allan, Dunedin, May 3.

TO THfc EDITOR. Sir, —Why all this wrangling and bickering because one girl is better than all her chums when prowess is superior. The spark kindled in this controversy has rapidly expanded into flame. How foolish mortals are. One can only appeal to the conquerors as well as to the defeated to consider their ways, and “tak a thought and mend," as Burns suggested to the devil, a “braw Scotch nicht,” reeling in kilt and' plaidy, pawky stories, a song or two aboot the heather, and may be, a bit glass o' 001 product, would be more appropriate than all this writing. Jazzing may also be included on the programme.—l am, etc,, Celt. Dunedin, May 3.
