MANCHESTER UNITY.

The N.G., Bro, F. T. Marryatt, presided over a good attendance of members at a meeting, of Loyal Milton Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F. Correspondence was dealt with including the clearance outwards of one member. Four members were reported to be on the sick funds and progressing satisfactorily. V.G. Bro. B. Gray reported attending the diamond jubilee of the Loyal Alexandra Lodge. P.P.G.M. Bro. W. J. Johnston responding to the toast of the “ District Executive,” spoke at length on district matters, stressing the, importance of the juvenile movement and urged members to give a large measure, of support to the Management Committee. The toast of visiting brethren ■was responded to by members of Loyal Albion, Cavershatn, Hand and Heart, Mosgiel, and Prince of Wales Lodges. The lodge has entered for the southern area initiation competition, to be held at Lawrence on Saturday, and a practice .was held, Bros. Johnston and W. Longworth coaching the officers. One candidate was initiated, the visiting brethren congratulating the lodge on the very fine rendering of the ritual both in the ceremony and in the general lodge work. At the close of the meeting visiting brethren were entertained at supper.

An enthusiastic gathering of members was present at the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Toko Juvenile Lodge on Monday evening, it being the occasion of the presentation, to the lodge by the Otago District Juvenile Council of the shield awarded for initiating most members during 1928. The president of the council, P.G. Bro. G. Irving, in presenting the shield, congratulated the lodge on its win, and said he hoped they would put forth as good an effort in the coming year. The council had decided to donate a prize for a quoits competition to be held on the first lodge night in June. P.G. Bro. M'Donald, on behalf of the lodge, returned thanks. G.M. Bro. W. Longworth (Albion) addressed members on the principles of Oddfellowship, tracing the Order from its origin in England to its present position and strength. P.P.G.M.’s Bros. W. J. Johnston, J. H. Clarke. P.G. E. Hey and N.G. Bro. W. Mowat also extended fraternal greetings from their respective lodges. During the evening .one candidate was initiated.

The Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge met on Tuesday evening, N.G. Bro. T. Tate presiding over a large attendance of members. One new member was initiated and three propositions' for membership received. A member was received by clearance, from the Loyal Maniototo Lodge. After the usual business had been transacted the N.G. asked Per. Sec. Bro. James Brown to make reference to the anniversary of Anzac. Bro. Brown stated that, this being their nearest meeting to Anzac Day, it was fitting and proper that they should pay their tribute to those who fell during, the-war. Bro. Brown in a brief and interesting address dealt with many of the stirring incidents of the war, particularly with the episode of Gallipoli, which, though at first was looked upon as a failure, in the light of later revelations could be termed a success. Members afterwards stood, in silence as" a mark of respect. Bro. Brown was thanked for his address. On resuming a visit was received from the members of the District Executive, P.P.G.M Bro. Johnston introducing the P.G.M. (Bro. P. Young) and P.D.G.M. (Bro. T. Michelle) who were cordially welcomed and honoured with the usual toast. Bros.- Young and Michelle responded,'returning thanks for their welcome, and spoke on “ service,” which they were prepared to give for the benefit of the Order. The P.G.M. announced that the executive -would be visiting Lawrence on Saturday to attend the South Otago annual initiation competition. The P. Sec., Bro. J. Hopcfaft, P. Treas. Bro. A. Sligo, and P.P.G.M. Bro. W. J. Johnston also acknowledged the toast, A number of visiting. brethren responded to the toast of the visitors.

The Loyal Dunedin Lodge met on Thursday evening, the N.G. (Bro. M'Dougill) in the chair. There was a good attendance of members, including visiting brethren from Hand and Heart, Valley and Albion Lodges. One new member was initiated. The meeting was adjourned early in the evening to carry out a card tournament as arranged. A match was played with the Loyal Hand and Heart members, resulting in victory for the Dunedin Lodge. A cordial welcome was extended to' P.P.G.M. Bro. R. S Black, who was also the recipient of congratulations on his elevation to the majoralty. It was decided- to forward congratulations to an old member of the lodge. Bro. A. Goodali, on his election to the Timani Hospital Board. The anniversary of the lodge falling on May IC, it was decided to hold an open evening in the form of a social and dance, and to invite sister lodges to be present at the function.
