LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS.

ADDITIONAL RETURNS. A large number of additional returns giving the results of the local body elections in various parts of -the country came to hand yesterday, and are printed below. The official count in connection with the Dunedin City Council will not bo completed for about a week. THE CITY MAYORALTY. Owing to the result of the mayoral contest being announced from the Town Hall steps earlier than he expected, Mr John M'Donald did not put in an appearance until some time after the other candidates had addressed the assembled electors. , Mr M'Donald congratulated Mr Black on bis victory, and expressed the hope that Mr and Mrs Black would have a successful term of office. He himself was in the unfortunate position ot having come last. It _ had been felt that a change was required in the council, and also in the mayoral chair, and he (Mr M'Donald), who had been a councillor and also an occupant of the mayoral chair, was looked upon as a likely man. Referring to the fact that the Electoral Association had asked Mr Douglas and himself ko retire, Mr M'Donald said that Mr Douglas had agreed to do so, but he did not agree, for the reason that for 28 years he had contended that the proper policy for a man offering himself for the office of councillor or mayor should be to offer himself independently of the Ratepayers’ Association, and had he retired from the contest he would have defeated the whole of his lifetime’s work.
