THE BASIC WAGE
INCREASE IN AUSTRALIA. COST TO SHIP OIVNERS. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, May 2. A statement by the Overseas Shipping Representatives’ Association viewS with concern the additional heavy burden placed upon the ship owners by the 4s increase in the Australian basic wage, which will largely benefit the waterside workers. The estimated . increase will cost the ship owners £IOO,OOO annually, apart from the £23,000 due to the reimposition of child endowment tax. EFFECT OF THE INCREASE. MORE UNEMPLOYMENT. SYDNEY, May 2. (Received May 2, at 10 p.m.) The chairman of the Australian Woolgrowers’ Council issued a statement to the effect that the rise in the Federal Basic wage would inevitably lead to more unemployment. As the wool market was down 25 per cent., graziers would have to look round for a way of reducing their overhead charges.
