SOUTH OTAGO.

BALCLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS (From Odr Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA. May 3. In connection with the local elections yesterday, it is interesting to note that although there were 15 candidates for the council and two for the mayoralty, only 446 electors exercised their right to vote out of a roll number of 683, which was slightly'increased by several declaratory votes. In the election of a member of the Otago Power Board to represent Balclutha Borough and that portion Clutha County within the beard’s district, the position was even worse, in that the roll contained 1299 names, and only 483 votes were recorded. At Port Holyneux only five persons voted, and it is estimated that those five votes cost the authorities 10s each in expenses inciHental to the taking of the poll. At Owaka, with over 400 names on the roll, only 21 voted. At the declaration of the poll at Balclutha the successful candidate (Mr Russell) said he understood that there was-a possibility of a rate over the Power Board’s district in the near future, but he hoped that ir would not be for a little while yet SHOOTING SEASON. The shooting season opened yesterday under somewhat unfavourable weather conditions, yet quite a Dumber braved the elements in order to participate in the. sporting joy of the “first.” Ducks are reported to have been fairly shy, but nevertheless good bags were made, and a number of local shooters renewed their acquaintance with the creeks and swamps where the wild fowl foregather. The following secured bags that were worth mentioning ;■—Messrs \y. Keen and James Jenkins, six ducks on the Waitopeka; W Mason and party, six; Thomas Telford, six on the Pnerua; Wilson Elliott and W. B. Telford, 39 on the Puerua; J. E Barclay, 11 on the Puerua; A.
