NEW ZEALAND ARTISTS.
SEVEN AND FIVE SOCIETY. (From Opr Own Correspondent.) ' LONDON, March 21. Miss Frances Hodgkins,., the New Zealand artist, is showing some of her work at. toe exhibition given by : the Seven and Five.. Soaety. This’ advanced school of painting has a number of members who have i.lready, made a name for themselves but who have nciw. struck out ou unconventional lines. . There are other members. -who! one feels, are only experimenting in the unusual, not always with satisfactory ;results, , Miss, Hodgkins has two paintings of liimian figures—“ Boy In a Wood B and The Garden.” Bqth of these are. worked out on most unusual lines so far as form is concerned, but the colour scheme ,is most striking, and doubtless appeals very strongly, to those who understand'-what this advanced school of painters are alining at: Miss Hodgkins, however, has der veloped a new idea which does appeal to the less sophisticated. She has produced several still -life studies on entirely-origi-nal lines. The subject matter is quite uninteresting—a chair, plates'of apples, eggs, and ■ other < simple articles—but her treatment in regard to light and colouring is masterly. The artist aims at producing a- decorative effect which will not weary one, but ■ give _ ever-increasing pleasure. ■ A picture depicting two King Charles spaniels is not only decorative, but amusing, Mr Len Lye, of Christchurch, has advanced ideas of art expression. He, is showing in the same exhibition patterns for two shawls, a curtain, a fabric, and-a-scarf. Air.these fprm and colour schemes are, very, much .on the lines of .what the Theosophist knowsns thought forms. They certainly have their; attractiveness.
