NAUTICAL INQUIRY.

STRANDING OF A KETCH. THE MASTER EXONERATED. {Per United Press' Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Anri! 30. A verdict that the master (Captain T. Henderson) was not to blame was. returned at the nautical inquiry into the stranding of the auxiliary ketch Aratapu at Waitara on March 30, which was opened at Lyttelton yesterday. Mr H. A, Young, S.M., and the assessors decided on the evidence that Captain Henderson had wisely used his discretion in deciding to enter, the port. He had negotiated the bar safely, and that was the only point on which he had information. It was true that the harbour master had told the master of the Aratapu that the Spit had shifted, but he had not suggested that the change would affect the water inside the bar. The harbour master, knowing the conditions, should have taken soundings inside the bar. The master expected the harbour master to take soundings ami to tell him if there was a material change.
