WAIKOUAITI COUNTY ELECTIONS.
TO THE EDITOR Sir. —Kindly allow me to commend to the. notice of every ratepayer in the county the letter which appeared in vour columns on th£ 24th inst., written by Mr J. C. Smith, of Lovell’s Flat. It would he well for the county if every ratepayer would read. mark. learn, and inward'y digest the contents of that letter. All_ who have watched the work of the retiring council, as T have done, will support those councillors seeking re-election who have been working in their interest for many years, and not those so-called “ progressives,” who propose to raise large loans for the purpose of laying down concrete blocks set on sand on the Main North road. If this were done another loan would be required at an early date to take the blocks up again. Those people
who would support such a scheme lack experience, for it would prove disastrous to the ratepayers as a whole. The Highways Board took over a little over seven miles of the Main North road not quite five years ago, and, so far as can be ascertained roughly, about £60,000 has been spent on . it, and yet, if this part of the road were left for three months without attention it would be in a ,siatc than any in the county, and if the council spent money at the same rate on all the other roads in the county the cost would exceed the. total toteable value of the county in one year. I believe that it behoves every ratepayer who does not want to give his property away to exercise bis vote in favour of those men who have proved themselves to be capable in the past.—l am, etc., „ , „ DILIGEKTIA. Sawyers’ Bay, April 29.
