RACING NEWS FIXTURES. May 3, 4.—Marlborough R.C. May 4.—Oamaru J.C. May 4. —Marton J.C. May 4.—Oamaru J.C. May 9, 11. Egmont R.C. May 16, 18. —Wanganui J.C. May 25.—Ashburton R.C. June 1. 3.—Otaki Maori R.C, June 1,3, s.—Dunedin J.C. June 1, 31 s.—Auckland R.C. Juno 20, 22.—South Canterbury J.C. By Sentinel. Nominations for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting are due on Friday of next week—not this week. After the recent heavy rains it was only natural that the Wingatui tracks would be on the soft side. The inside grass was open yesterday only to horses engaged at Oamaru and the horses leaving for the north to-day also had the privilege of a gallop. The No. 1 grass track was open' and Filosol and Killorna galloped five furlongs without being fully extended. Membo appeared to be better than Best Policy over the same ground, but the latter did not’appear to be able to act in the slippery going so well as his companion. GJenrowan and El Boa worked a strong half-mile.- ~ ” The strong wind was drying the track when Black Duke, Overhaul and Umtali were sent a, strong' gallop over, a .mile, Umtali did ; not appear able to go, with the others, and at the finish Black Duke appeared to be waiting on Overhaul. Later Brdad.field and Little Queen -went over five furlongs. : ' ' The others in action mostly worked on the schooling course, and were restricted to useful exercise necessitated by the ■tnte'of • the going; ’ ’ ' ■ Nedda was on the course yesterday morning, but did not appear on "the track. She wore the nowadays very unusual hood, and-whs well fugged-up and protected against a very cold wind blowing off the snow that capped the Maungatua Ranges. She played up and kicked , about when,; on the lead and showed every evidence that her successful campaign in Australia Fas not resulted in a loss of vigor and vitality. . , C.' Christie had the. Night Raid—Miss Muriel filly on the course vesterday morning. She seems ..a rather likely sort, and the writer, suggested that Noctis would be a suitable name for her. Umtali showed slight signs of lameness when he came out to work yesterday morning, but as be afterwards galloped with Black Duke and . Overhaul, ; the trouble was apparently not deemed of a serious nature. It was thought that after the storm and bad weather of the past couple of days that the new track at Wingatui would be open yesterday morning to save the grass tracks. It'seems, however, that it will be kept in, reserve for the winter meeting which is now looming up over the sporting horizon. Kapuna, Umtali, ..Full Flight, Black Duke, Overhaul and Booster will be shipped north this afternoon to fulfil engagements planned for a North Island circuit; ■ • Although the schooling fences now look a bit higher than formerly, J. Crawford informed the writer yesterday morning that they are ; the same height.as the brush which they replaced. The recent bad weather was a bar to fast work at Wingatui yesterday morning, and although several horses with en-.. gageraents at .Oimara; were [.allowed to stride along they -, were not' allowed to extend themselves, fully. The surgeon’s sabre has been out of the scabbard this week in connection with prominent figures in the sporting world. Mr J. Trengrove is disking a good recovery from an operation, and on Mondaymorning S. G. Ware also underwent an operation, which will keep him off the scene for a couple of weeks. At latest advices both patients were doing well, and were on the high road to ‘ complete recovery. The Phalaris horse Parwiz, who, the cables informed us, won the City and Suburban of ISOOsovs, cost 10,900 guineas as a yearling, and now as a four-year-old he has won his first important race. Some clubs are adopting the practical idea, of giving a stopwatch or a pair of field glasses as a trophy. They are both useful and ornamental. Referring to a gallop by the American colt, Reigh Count, London Sporting Life says:—" What impresses is that he is not a flashy colt by any means, but his workmanlike qualities are strongly in evidence already. He moved on such an even keel that one could scarcely imagine him getting unbalanced. ...” Abeyfeldy is said to have been suffering from a slightly injured leg when he ran at Amberley, and in consequence was a hit short of work. Countersign is reported to have slightly ricked herself, and hence her absence from the Starky Cup field at Amberley. The English-bred horse Gothic (by Tracery—Sumlrilla), who has won several important races in Australia under the colours of Mr S. Green, and who is booked for the stud this year, wap (says Horse and Hound) recently injured in England fpr £15.000. The statement that a French breeder made,an offer of 18,000 guineas for Gothic last November is borne out by the Bloodstock Breeders’ Review, Confusion, seems ,to;.have existed' recently as to the correct way in which Glyn Dim, winner of a maiden race at Masterton, has his name spelt. Glendu, Glen Du. Glyn Du, and Glen Dim being among the number (says an exchange). While the name registered for the half-brother of the defunct Kalos is Glyn Dhii, Mrs Alan McDonald, of- Awapuni, under whose tutorship the Kilbroney gelding is, states that'The name actually sent forward was Lyn Dhti.'.Welsh for Black Lake, the name his dam-bears, , TROTTING FIX TIRES May 4 —Cambridge T.C May 4, -Oamaru J C (two events) Maj 9, II Forbnry Park T.C. Logan Princess, ajthough dam of a winner, is still in training, and at present is quartered at.; D. Withers’s stable. At the Banks Peninsula meeting last month (says an exchange) Logap Princess won the Wairewa Handicap Trot from a big field. Regal Voyage was .a starter at the recent Cheviot and Ashburton meetings, and in the fast mile and a-half race won by Purser was in the. firing line for a good portion of the journey. The Lyttelton.Times says that J. Bryce produced another of his more than useful i maidens at Amberley, when he won the Kowai Trot with Mignoune by Matclilight —Hal Zolock mare. The doings of late of Linkman, Ngingo Ngiugo, Torchlight, and Tiimatakuru have brought Matclilight into a good deal of prominence, and there is bound to be' a bigger demand in future for his services as a sire than has been the case in recent years. Matclilight was a very fine racehorse, but when put to the stud breeders generally preferred the American horses without records to a horse that had proved himself a great stayer. Mignonne is only four years old. and was bred by Mr R. M. Morten. The leading race winner over the Green* , ovd track, near London, England, last ear was the blind trotter. Rosetta M„ >y Peter the Great 2.7£. out of Humma. V Bingen 2.6 J. She won 16 races. The West Coast trainer. T. Fricka, the dam of Drusus. is one of the latest in America to join the select band of mares that have produced 10 standard nerformances, horses capable of

going a mile in 2.20 or better. Included in the list are the following:—Fair Virginia 2.71, Erda 2.9 J, Drusua 2.9 J, March On 2.15 i, Our Ruth 2.10, Our Glen 2.193, Dora Sinclair 2.13 i, Bellrieka 2.15 J, and Winricka 2.131. Of this number all but Drusus are straight trotters. Another mare that has recently joined the heat is Adioo Dillon, the grand-dam of Travis Axwortliy. Her contributions are represented in the following.—Dillon Axworthy 2.10 J, Miss Peter Dillon 2.101, Peter_ Potemkin 2.15.1, Peter Dillon 2.81, American Harvester 2.8 J, Emma Harvester 2.41, Dillon de Forrest 2.16 J, Paul Harvester 2.10, Aldine Harvester 2.12 J, and Adioo Harvester 2,131.
