OBITUARY

SIR ALAN BURGOYNE. (United Press Association.) (By Electric .Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, April 26. The death is announced of Sir Alan Burgoyne; aged 48. Lieutenant-colonel Sir Alan Hughes Burgoyne, who had a most distinguished career," had been member of Parliament for the Aylesbury division of Bucks since 1924. He was a director of several large and important British and overseas companies, and owned considerable property in Australia. He had travelled extensively, and was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, A.1.N.A., C.l.Mech.E., A.M,Inst.A.E., and a member of many, other important bodies. He was hon. secretary of the Parliamentary Air Committee, 1916-18,, and treasurer 1919-20.. In 1903 he was arrested at Port Arthur by the Russians on a false charge of spying, and imprisoned. Had lectured at the Royal Society of Arts (silver medal) and at the Royal United Service Institution, Whitehall. During the war he served in France, Italy, Palestine, and India, and was promoted lieutenant-colonel in 1918 (1914-15 medal, Order of the Crown of Italy, and Officer of the Legion of Honour). He wrote on many subjects, his publications including books on land and sea warfare, poems, and songs. His first bdok, “A Short History of Submarine Navigation,” was published in 1902, and in 1918 he published “ Songs: Heart o’ Mine; God’s Gift.” - He founded the Navy League Annual in 1907 and edited it for seven years. He was also a regular contributor to. the technical press on naval subjects.”
