ROWING.
OTAGO EIGHT-OAR CREW. A complimentary dinner was tendered the Otago interprovincial eight-oar crew by the Otago Rowing Association on Saturday evening. There was a large representative gathering of the older school of oarsmen. After the loyal toast, that of “ The Otago Rowing Association ” was proposed by Messrs F. Foster and Mark Higgins, and responded to by the president of the association (Mr E. V. Fairbairn) and Messrs P. J. Priest and W. J. Wilson. The latter gave an interesting account of rowing matters extending over a period of 36 years. Messrs J, M'Grnth and M. Priest, whose names are legion in rowing circles in Now Zealand, proposed the toast of “The Otago .Eight and Coach.” In a very interesting reply, Mr F. Brugh related the incidents of the training and the race held at Lyttelton last month. He also referred to the hospitality and attention shown the visiting crews by the members of both the New Zealand and Canterbury Rowing Associations. _ Mr R. Thompson, the coach of the Otago eight, was very cordially received. - He expressed his appreciation of the crow's soifsacritice and exertions in training. The members of the crew were presented with their representative caps by the chairman, who gave a brief outline of each recipient's rowing career. Appreciative reference was made to the services rendered the Otago Association by Mr S. G. Stychc, who had held the position of secretary for some years. Mr St.ycho's reply was characteristically brief and to the point. An enjoyable function terminated with the best wishes for another win for Otago in the interprovincial cight-onr championship race next year.
