UPS AND DOWNS.

ENTERTAINMENT AT BURNS HALL. Tlic body of Burns Hall was well filled on Saturday evening, when the pupils of Miss Helen Gardner’s dramatic class presented “ Ups and Downs,” a highly amusing and altogether delightful entertainment, in aid of the flood relief fund. Five clever farces, a scene from “ Hypolytus,” and two charming little duets comprised the programme, and, although many of the performers were quite youthful, all showed evidences of careful and patient teaching, and handled their respective parts creditably The first sketch, -“Whitewashing Julia,” a subtle little satire on the seandalniongering propensities of a small-town clique, was cleverly done, and a wireless 4 skit.” “Listening In,” which showed what can happen to the radio expert who tunes in to too many stations caused roars of laughter. In the graver f‘J c . scene from “ Hippolytus,” Euripides, in which the dramatic death ot Phsria, the wife of Pheseus, was admirably depicted by the principals. Misses Margaret Seelye and Sheila Ncilson, and iv adf?e Yates gave a restrained but effective rendering of the scene, “From An Old buffer,” Another clever farce ivns the " Strutham Amateurs,'” in tvhicli some excellent comedy was seen, and "The Photographer ” and "Scraps” also kept the audience in a joyous mood, Twn vocal numbers, the duets "Sweet Alice” , Two were rendered delightfully by Miss Betty Barling and Master Ken Stewart, and these two small artiste thoroughly merited the rounds of applause they received. Those taking the various parts were Misses Verft Stevens, Veda M'Ahan. Lucy Robinson, Billie Milchcll. Rose Lazarus, Billee Robinson, Tui Bowman Nanna Newey, Dessa Stabb. Mary Jolly, Beck Lazarus, Nancy Abernethj*, Dorothy Clark, Mabel M'lndoe and Messrs Harold Bain, Jack Lucas, Claude Grey, and Norman West. Mr Arthur Thomson acted as accompanist, bps and Downs” will be repeated this evening.
