JUNIOR TOURNAMENT. A New Zealand junior hard court championship is to be played, on the Miramar courts, Wellington, commencing on May 14. Singles and. doubles for both girls and boys will be played, as well as mixed doubles, and there will also, be an interisland match between junior teams representing each island. Competitors are to . be nominated by their respective associations, and nominations will close with the secretary of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association to-morrow. Mr VV. J; Melody, of Wellington, is primarily responsible for the idea of a junior tournament, and as the innovation is one that is likely to have an important bearing on the future welfare of the game, it is hoped that there will be a large and representative entry of leading juniors from the different centres. J, Melody, of Wellington, the first comprehensive New Zealand junior championship for boys and girls under 18 years will be held next month on the association's courts in Wellington; Each association has already announced its quota of the best juniors of both sexes and entries will close with the secretary in Wellington on Tuesday. The New Zealand Association guarantees £1 towards each players expenses, and the remainder is borne proportionately by the players and the local association of such -players. The fares are paid from an accumulated fund. All players will be billeted in Wellington during the tournament without any other expense. Already entries are notified from the Canterbury, Auckland, Wellington, Wairarapa, and Wangnmu Associations. The secretary of the -New Zealand. Lawn Tennis Association is anxious that all other asociations throughout New Zealand will nominate pl-ivers and so make the tournament a real success. A special committee with the interest of junior lawn tenuis at heart has been set-up by the New Zealand Lawn lennis Association, and all boys and girls entering will be properly looked after and assured of helpful games even should they be eliminated in the early stages of the championships. The tournament will represent a bold step to further the causeof junior lawn tennis, and is worthy of all support by the various associations.
