ESCAPES FROM CUSTODY.

POLICE OFFICERS EVADED. (Peb United Press Association.;. AUCKLAND, February. 14. No trace has been discovered of John W. Osborne, aged 17, who escaped from custody at the City Police Station at 1 o’clock this morning. r Osborne had been arrested on a, chafge of stealing jewellery and money oF a total value of £75 from a hoiise at Mount Roskill. He was locked in a cell at the station,-and when a sergeant and constable were making their rounds of the cells about 1 o’clock he slipped between them, down the', corridors, and ran out of the backyard gate of the station. When Osborne’s name was called in the Police Court this morning it was stated that he got away by a clever ruse. The case for adjourned for a week. 1 , Another escape from custody was made yesterday afternoon, but in this case liberty was brief. Taking advantage of the fact that he had been allowed to go to his home in Ponaonby to collect hifi effects, , Bartholomew MTlroy . leaped from a window and escaped from a detective. MTlroy had been charged with theft, and had been remanded in custody. A search, was .made, and late at night the man was re-arrested in Wellesley street; west.
