AMATEUR SWIMMING.

OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING,

SUCCESSFUL OPENING SESSION,

The -opening session of the Otago swimming championships was held last night in the Municipal Baths. Unfortunately there was only a fair attendance, and this, in conjunction with the fact that entries in a number of;the events were poor, militated considerably against the success of the meeting. A disappointing feature of the evening was the absence, of any new blood in the senior swiihiniug events, which resulted in most of the races being somewhat uninteresting. , Indeed, all the championships wore , retained by the holders with the exception of the 220 Yards Breast-stroke which went to C. B. Lewis, a past holder. R. Geddas put up a good performance in the 75 , Yards Junior Boys’'Breaststroke event, in which his time was only I l-ssec outside The New Zealand salt water record. The Relay Championship, which the holders (Kiwi) just failed to retain by a touch, proved a thrilling struggle \yhich brought the spectators to their feet, the last lap, in which Simpson and Bailey had a neckand neck-tussle all the way, being one of the most closely contested encounters seen in the baths for a long time. The following are the results;— 100 YARDS MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP. N. H. Bailey (Kiwi) .... 1 W. Boyd (Kiwi) .. . . .. „f , H. Gillies (Kiwi) ...... f Only starters.

Bailey and Boyd turned almost together but going up the second lap the former gradually drew away and went on to win by five yards from Gilliea and Boyd, who touched together to dead-beat for second place. Time, 65 3-ssee. 220 YARDS MEN'S BREAST-STROKE CHAMPIONSHIP. C. B. Lewis (Bt. Clair) .... 1

Clarko, and Harrod were swimming level until the latter retired with a lap and a-half to go. Lewis continued to increase his lead and won comfortably by 10 yards. Time, Smin 18 3-ssec. ■ 100 YARDS LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP. Miss, M. Jepadn .(Dunedin) ..1

Bailey) .. .. .. .. .. 2 Aiso started; Dunedin (J. Fleming, Jfipsoii, R. Caldcr, B. Rcrr), This was the best race of the evening. Early in the race it could be seen that the main struggle would be between Kiwi (the holders) and St. Clair. Until the third lap there was little to choose between these two teams, but' Fogg, swimming third man for St. Clair, swam a great lap aguiuet Gillies, and sent Simpson away with a two yards advantage over Bailey. Between these two' an excitmg tussle ensued, Simpson just getting the verdict for hie team by a touch. Time, Imin ISsec. 75 YARDS JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. R. Geddes (Kiwi) .. .... i W.
