TRAMWAY MATTERS.

PURCHASE OF CAR BODIES. STOCK EXCHANGE SAFETY ZONE. The Tramway Committee will report as follows to the meeting of the City Council on Wednesday night:— Two of the four car bodies purchased from the Takapuna -Tramway Company have come to jiand, «and the remaining two are expected to arrive within the nest two weeks. Authority has been granted to invite tenders for the necessary electrical equipments. and trucks for the four cars. The only alteration from the equipment on the existing cars will be the adoption of four motors with 26inch wheels-in lieu of two motors with 33-fk wheels. Thiß arrangement gives a lower Joading line, quicker acceleration and smoother running, and is now the modern practice. A deputation from the City Ratepayers' Association submitted the following proposals to,, the committee for consideration:— The removal of the safety zone at the Stock Exchange. The removal of the tramway tracks in Cargill road to the centre of the widened roadway. The committee has given both proposalscareful consideration, and in respect of the first is of the opinion that it would be a mistake to remove the safety zone. It is a convenience 'to passengers which has now become essential in;order to obviate congestion at the. Stock Exchange, and its removal would undoubtedly tend to cause congestion and the consequent liability of accidents. There have been no accidents of a Berious nature due to the presence of the zone. "With regard to the rails in Cargill road, the rails as they stand at present comply with the Order-in-Council as to distances from kerbs. The line is in good order and does not call for renewal. The estimate for shifting the line nearest the kerb to the' other side of the road is £8295, and for shifting both lines to the centre £16,335. The matter has meanbeen remitted to the Works Committee in view of, th fact that the work, if considered necessary, would be primarily for road improvement purposes.
