TAPAUI NOTES.

(From Odr Own Correspondent.); :* TAPANUI, December 4. FARMERS’ CLUB. , P r , K, Rodger presided over a large attendance of members of the Tapanui banners’ Club on Saturday evening. Thirrm. ne l v members were elected. _-lhe following class was added to the Jersey section:—For the best grade Jersey cow or heifer, in milk (unregistered) —hirst £l, second 10s. This was the gift of Mr N. Moore. It was decided that the cattle, horse, and sheep sections were ■ it same as last year. somev discussion it was decided that the dairy produce section be left the same as last year, but that the; president j vice-president, and secretary were appointed a sub-committee to revise the prize list.

J, Hay presented a cup, value £5 sa, to. be known-as the “Tapanui Courier Cup,” for most points in draught D„ Robertson and Messrs MGillyray Bros, presented £5 5s and £2 2s respectively to the prize fund. There was a splendid attendance at the monthly meeting of the .Loyal Tapamii Lodge held on Thursday evening. N.G. Bro. J. Robertson presided, and before commencing the business made feeling referenee to the loss, sustained by Bro. 0. L. Munyard in the death of his daughter, and extended the lodge’s sympathy to him; Amongst the correspondence dealt with was a letter from R.P.G.M. Bro. A La-wry, Dunedin, in respect of the 1000 new- members’'campaign. Up to November the Otago district had enrolled 649 members, of which 24 were from this lodge, which was considered, satisfactory. Two new members were initiated into the Order and two* candidates ivere proposed for membership. P.G, Bro. P. Thomson moved that a handbook be posted every year to each member of the lodge who had been members for 40 years and over; carried / unanimously. The following nominations were, received for the ensuing half-year:—N.G,’ Bro. William Lischner; V.G., Bro. Andrew Potts; elective secretary, Bro.. J. R. Kirk. For wardens and guardians’ position a 3arge number o£ nominations were received, . On Saturday evening 20 officers and members of the lodge motored to Lawrence and _ paid an official visit to the Tuapeka Pioneer Lodge, where they were heartily welcomed. Alter the official business of the lodge had- been completed the visiting Oddfellows were entertained to supper, when the officers of the Tapanui Lodge gave the initiation charge. PERSONAL. Mr A. Collie of Ratanui, has been appointed manager of the local cheese- factory, for which position there wore 30 applicants. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Tapanui Borough Council was held on Monday evening,.when there were present the Mayor (W. R, Quin), Crs M'Donald. Naylor, Bradley, Cameron, Beattie, and Edgar.

A letter was received from Bradley and Gosden requesting that blinds be fitted to the -windows of the Town Hall, as at .present the hall was not dark enough to sho\v pictures in the early part of their programme. They offered to supply 10 blinds on spring rollers at net cost', viz., 9s 6d each, and fit same free of charge.— It was decided to accept the firm’s offer. A letter was received from J. Gosden, applying, for permission to erect a garage in'wood-and iron at'his residence.—-The application was granted. Mrs E. S. Sim wrote applying for permission .to; use a'hose on her garden, free of. charge, when necessary.—Permission was granted during pleasure of the,council. . The inspector of police, Invercargill, wrote advising that in 1913 arrangements were made with the council for a supply of water for -.domestic purposes for the Tapanui Police Station and that there was no record of any accounts being received from the council for the water supplied. In a further communication he pointed put that the files showed that the public works- engineer was instructed to -arrange for a supply of water for domestic purposes only, and that the engineer duly made the application, which was granted. On receipt of a reply from the council he would refer the matter of settlement to his .department in Wellington.—lt was agreed to offer to accept £3 per year for the full terra 1 . ■

. A letter was received from E. G. Kil--6011, surveyor. Gore, forwarding a plan of the cemetery extension, which was recently surveyed by ,him. on behalf of 'the council.—Received.. , r A letter was received from the Auditorgeneral, returning the borough balance sheet for the year ended March 31, 1928, whiqh was certified as correct. —Received. P. S. Dyson, No. 17 District Highways Board, wrbte advising that the Main Highways Amendment Act passed by Parliament at the last session, decided that from April 1, 1028, all expenditure on maintenmee and on new bridges would be subsidised on the basis of £2 for £1; — Received.

W. Sinclair was ' appointed borough valuator at a fee of £2 2s. - The fire brigade was granted the usual subsidy of £l2 for the year. The dog tax was fixed the same as last year, namely, 2s 6d for working sheep dogs, and all other breeds 10s. It was decided that tenders be called for the usual supply of gravel for the ensuing 12 months. It was resolved that a horse-drawn mower be employed to cut the grass on the sides- of the roads where necessary. The Mayor reported that lira M‘Co.ll bad approached him again regarding the drain running through her property and that she would now be pleased to accept the council’s pffer, made some time ago, for the council to clean out the drain. — It was agreed that the dayman should do the necessary cleaning. The ‘Jubilee Committee of the Tapanui School was granted the use of forms from the Town Hall in connection with the jubilee functions: that the council, recommend to the Mayor that he request the shopkeepers of Tapanni to observe December 14 as a half-holiday on the occasion of the school_ jubilee. It was decided to cal] for tenders for the following work:—Approximately six chains of channelling in Northumberland street from the existing channel opposite the courthouse to the corner of York street, also for additions to the Town Hall. Accounts amounting to £B9 15s 5d were, passed for payment.
