THE BYRD EXPEDITION.

MESSAGE FROM PRIME MINISTER. OFFER OF ASSISTANCE APPRECIATED. (Per United Press .Association.) I WELLINGTON, December 3. On the eve of the departure of Commander Byrd’s expedition for the Antartic, the Prime Minister (Mr. J. G. Coates), on behalf of the people of New Zealand, extended to the expedition cordial good wishes for the success of the undertaking. He stated that New Zealand would -render all the assistance in its power should occasion arise. . • Commander Byrd replied expressing gratitude for the hospitality he had received and for the offer of assistance. RADIO MESSAGES. COMMANDER BYRD’S APPRECIATION. ’ The l following radio message has been received by the Otago Harbour Board from Commander Byrd, at sea;—“Appreciation more than words can tell all you did to get us away for the Antarctic. That was certainly fine co-operation and very efficient work- Best wishes.” Yesterday, Mr R. C. Miller received the following radiogram from Commander Byrd on board the City o‘f New York:— “I deeply appreciate’jkmr co-operation in placing Quarantine Island at tho disposal of the Antarctic expedition for the dog teams and personnel, and thank you for caring for _ the dogs, and your helpful assistance in getting them to Dunedin; also for permitting the Harbour Board tug to come alongside, your wall: 'best wishes."

The following radio message was received yesterday morning by Mr A. A. Paape. of the Grand _ Hotel, item Commander Byrd,of the City of New York;— “Thanks again for making our slay in Dunedin so enjoyable, greatly appreciate it. Best wishes.”'
