MINISTER OF PUBLIC WORKS.

VISIT TO GORE DISTRICT. (From Our Own Correspondent.) GORE, March 10. Members of Ibo Goro Borough Council met Mr K. S. Williams, Minister of Public Works, in connection with several matters on Friday. The council was represented by tho Deputy-mayor (Mr J. Brownlie), and Os T. Sim, A. T. Newman, J A. Haldcy, and tho town clerk (Mr D. IJarvoy). Tne attention of the Minister was drawn to the dangerous state of the railway crossing at the intersection of Main and Mersey streets, and it was stated that, with a view to eliminating danger to pedestrians and vehicular traffic,- it had been suggested to the Railways Department that an underground subway from the Main street to Gorton street should bo constructed. In the event of this being done the road now crossing the line would be closed. During the day shunting was almost continuously being carried out in the railway yards, and accidents had happened at different times. Another mailer brought before the Minister was tho doe ire of tho council to obtain from the Railways Department the use of a portion of the railway reserve for tho purpose of erecting a ladies’ convenience underground. Mr Newman mentioned that the Chamber of Commerce had decided to make representations to the Railways Department to have a private telephone line installed between tho parcels office ami the goods shed. At present, anyone calling at the parcels office to inquire for parcels was frequently requested to make inquiries at the goods office. The Minister advised that tho various matters would bo brought under the notice of Mr J. G. Coates, Minister of Railways. AT MATAURA. At Mataura the Minister was met by the Mayor (Mr C, D. M’Oonnell), who brought before him the matter of raiing of farm lands within the borough. It was explained that the Government was at present arranging for a commission to report on the position as it exists in the borough of Otaki. which was considered to he a tyoical case. Any legislation arising out of the recommendation of the commission would, of course, apply to others similarly situated. Other matters discussed were the erection of a new courthouse and the provision of a rcsiden for tho headmaster of the school. The Minister stated that he would represent tho position to the Ministers concerned.
