MR ELLIS'S RESIGNATION. (Peb United Paras Association.! ELTIIAM, March 9. The Commissioner of State Forests (Hr O. J. Hawken) announces that Mr L. Mackintosh EHis of Forestry) is relinquishing his position at the end of the present mouth in order to take up an important post outside the service. The retiring director, who is -a Canadian, states the Minister, was appointed to the position when it was created in January. 1926. on the rec <? m ' dation of the High Commissioner _ after consultation with Lord Lovat (chairman of the Pritish Forestry ConuuUsion). Under the Forests Act the app hutment automatically terminated in 1025, when Mr EUie was re-appointed for a .urtuer term, which was recently extended to 1931. Mr Ellis is well known m many parts of the world as an expert in forestry work, and his guiding hand will be greatly missed by the department. There can he no doubt that since he took charge fore Try in the Dominion has progressed rapidly, while the methods of planting and administration have been brought right up to date. The rate of progress can be measured by, the .growth of the department’s plantations, winch nave increased from an area of 40,000 > awsm 1021 to about 100,000 acres in 1927.
