Applicants are to state the remuneration required, and what other race meetings they are prepared to attend. Mr L. G. Hill has left for Queenstown, and expects that a few days’ rest in the Lakes district will completely restore him to robust health. Mr R. H. Skipworth came in for a good deal of praise in recognition of the excellent starting he accomplished at the Dannevirke meeting. The speedy sprinter Ruffles is again hitting out freely in his work. The Waimate Racing Club’s meeting takes place on Thursday of next week. Unfortunately it clashes with the more important meeting at Trontham, and so 'will lose patronage which would otherwise come from Riccarton. Eulalie has been carrying her speed up to seven furlongs in some of her tasks on tho track. It costs only Usovs to start a horse Ju the Groat Northern Steeplechase of SOOOsovs. Tho race is run at Onkapariuga, and the stake is cut up, with 2000sovs to the winner and then JOOso-s, SOOsovs, and 200sovs. The Canterbury District Committee has made a recommendation that a jockey’s license be granted to R. E. il’Lellan. Tho South Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting has been set down for April 27 and 28. It is reported that the Paper Money filly Polly Flinders, who was formerly trained at Wingatni, recently changed hands in Sydney at 600 guineas. Polly Flinders has won several races in Australia amongst the ponies. She, by the way, is referred by Australian papers as out of a Solfanello mare. Solfancllo is a well-known gelding. As a matter of fact. Polly Flinders is a rather attrac-tively-bred filly as her dam was got by Solferino—from Stopka, by St. Leger from Stcpfeldt, a sister to Stepniak, and also to She. the dam of Bobadil, one of the best of his day in Australia. Mr E, Lee Steere, the owner of the ■one-time champion Eurythmic, is at present on a tour of New Zealand. To Monanui recently pulled up lame, 'and has been thrown out of training. Beau Cavalier is again in work after a brief spell. A. TTatus has joined the stable controlled by Captain J. Gage-Williams at Trentham. ... . It is reported that C Emerson wifi have the mount on Wayward in the Waimate Cl Qur old friend, Pilliewinkie, does not appear to be very far away from his best form when he could finish within a length of the crack colt, Trivalve, at weight-for-age in the Governor’s Plate. Trivalve’s career this season marks a triumphal march, and stamps him as one of the best three-year-olds-ever seen in Australia. Incidentally,- bis success must restore the Musket line into renewed apAlthough Satrap has not shaped so well as his admirers expected during the present season, he will probably start favouriate for the New Zealand St Leger o Ibe run at Wellingtin next week. Ibey say he is not by any means an easy ride, and so one may be blaming the rider fm defeat when the lack of success should be attributed to a will of his own possessed by the mount.

, The Forbury Park Trotting Club will hang up 4800sova in prize-money at the Tvinter meeting to be held on May 3 and 5. Stakes will range in value from 200 soys to 600sovs. The principal events will carry a 600sovs stake for a 4.32. or better class. Shadowland, the winner of the Manawatu Trotting Cup, was got by Realm from Grey Owl by Nabocklich. 'Within the near future two new stipendiary stewards will be appointed. The dominant question then arises whether amateur stewards are to dominate expert ideas or whether expert supervision will continue to be under the domination of amateurism. The conditions attached to the New Zealand Sires’ Produce Trotting Stakes of 550sovs provide for a standing start. The writer is strongly opposed to a standing start for young three-year-old trotters. The idea of a standing start is wrong from every point of view, and if adhered to will help to wreck tb e encouragement of the real light-harness horse. Anyone who thinks that a square trotter in the novice or any other division can break into speed from a flat-foot start has a lot to learn, and opinions in that direction have been responsible for killing the encouragement of the real light-harness horse. There are only two saddle races on the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s winter meeting. Both races are for pacers. The principal stayers’ races at_ the Forbury Park winter meeting provide lor a continuance of a 2.16 gait. The principal sprint events provide for a 2.15 or a 2.15 gait over half the distance. Patrons of the Waikato Trotting Club's meeting speak highly of the grounds and general appointments on the Claudelands course. It is reported that Jewel Wave spoilt her chance at the Waikato meeting through a mishap to her bridle. She, nevertheless, beat them all except Etta Cole, who is said to be a fairly smart actor on the track. A young trotter of considerable promise was seen in a favourable light in the Im-p-overs’ Handicap. This was the three-year-old filly Etta Cole, a daughter of that fine trotter Peterwah and the King Cole mare Lady Cole. She was backed down to a short price, and justified the confidence (says “ Picador ”) by winning with ridiculous ease, after being in front nearly all the way. Etta Cole is engaged in the New Zealand Sires’ Produce Trotting Stakes, to be decided at Forbury Park in May, and should bo a tough proposition for any of the three-year-old trotters by that time. -‘A writer in th e Auckland Star states that Mars was thought to be a certainty >vjien half the distance had been covered Jti tbe Raglan Handicap at the Waikato meeting. His driver was saving him and was just about to make a move forward and take the lead as they entered the back stretch' the last time, when Peter Grattan fell just in front of him. Mars ,was badly interfered with and lost all ciuuica.

Most keen followers of trotting were aware that Lady Dunmore was nicely handicapped in the Waikato Trotting Cup (says the Auckland Herald), and yet she was only fifth fancy with backers because of her uncertainty at the barrier. Lady Dunmore did skip slightly at the start, but lost little ground and was soon pacing well in a good position. All through she was handily placed, and, thanks to the fine driving of A. Broughton, had something left in reserve to come along with a good run in the straight and win decisively. There is no doubt that reinsmanship was a considerable factor in her success, and had either Native Prince or Loch Moigh been as skilfully handled she would have found it harder, although she certainly would have taken a lot of beating. Lady Dunmore registered tlie best performance of her career by going 4min 32 3-ssec off 4min 36sc. On the strength of a decisive win less than a couple of weeks previously, Native Prince was made favourite for the Waikato Trotting Cup, and (says “ Picador ”) though beaten into third pace, the honours of the race were certainly his. Conceding starts ranging up to 48yds to his opponents, he was hurried too much in the early stages to reach the front before going a mile. Three furlongs from home ho was challenged by Loch Moigh, and then, when the latter broke at the turn, h e was tackled by Lady Dunmore, whose challenge he was unable to withstand and was well beaten inside the distance. Apparently, J. Shaw did not realise there was a danger of losing second place at this stage, for he relaxed his efforts and Loch Moigh came with a late run to snatch that position in th e last few strides. Native Prince undoubtedly stopped badly, but with more care on the part of his driver must have been second. Native Prince went 4min 30 4-ssec—his best to date. TIMARU TROTTING CLUB. COLENE POINTER WINS THE CUP. (From Our Special Reporter.) TIMARU, March 9. After a postponement on account of rain, the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting was held in glorious sunshine. FRANKLIN RACES. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, March 9. The course at Pukekohe is in excellent order for the opening of the Franklin fixture to-morrow. The opening event is the Bombay Handicap, which has been divided into two divisions of 17 each. Brilliant Light and BombarcLer will be the respective favourites. The former is one of Jamieson’s string, and Bombarder lias come on considerably since he was last raced. There will be 10 brackets, but neither of those mentioned is included. There is little doubt that Quineoma will be a good favourite in the Puni Highweight Handicap, and he should be prominent, particularly with Bright Day a nonstarter. Uralla and Ballachulish may afford most opposition to the favourite. Of the 18 in the Buckland Handicap, Welcome Home, who, like Brilliant Light, will be ridden by T. Green, will not lack support, for he finished third in a similar race at Te Aroha after being slow away. Liaison is also expected to show some improvement on Te Aroha running. It appears at present as if there will not be more than seven or eight runners in the Franklin Cup. Royal Doulton is regarded as a most unlikely starter, for the kick she received at Te Aroha inflicted an ugly injury. Corinax will run only if a suitable light-weight can be ob-i tained, and no engagement had been made this afternoon. In the absence of this pair Eden Hall, a solid but not brilliant performer, will no doubt bo favourite, and it is also probable that Le Choucas will also be allowed to take his chance. This pair will be bracketed. Desert Glow, Gala Day, Sir Archie, Princess Ronnie, and True Blood are all well and doing good work on the tracks. Eden Hall and Desert Glow will probably carry a majority of the totalisator investments. _ Although trained in the country, it is known that Some Lady is in excellent fettle, and although she has none the best of the weights as compared with Dimmer and Value she will not lack support against this useful pair. Tea Time. Prince Otto, and Maeroom rather stand out in the six-horse sprint field in the Tuakau Flying Handicap, and with the top-weight and Maeroom claiming apprentices’ allowances their weights will be considerably reduced. Tea Time and Prince Otto can go fast all the way, and they will carry most of the money. If Micrometer is reserved for the Onewhero Hack she will be difficult to beat. She was very unlucky on both days at Te Aroha, and will bo faced with a more congenial task to-morrow. Her principal opponents may prove to be Piet and Schorr, both of whom, like Micrometer, will be suited by the nine-furlong course. Despite her bad showing on the greasy track at Te Aroha. Titree reads best _of the very useful field in the concluding event, the Pukekohe Handicap, of seven furlongs. This is her best distance, so that in the end she may -wind up favourite in what should prove an evenly distributed betting race. Day Guard and Siaosi on recent, showings may offer the most trouble to Titree.
