IRRIGATION IN CENTRAL OTAGO.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —One of the spokesmen of the deputation which waited on the Prime Minister on the 3rd inst. is reported to have stated that returned soldiers employed on irrigation works in his district were less than 25 per cent, efficient. This he apparently considered “ waste and extravagance,” “lack of departmental sympathy,” etc. A previous employer of these men and their like found them 100 per cent, efficient in any work given them to do; he approved of them being called “ Diggers.” Had it been otherwise this disgruntled fruit farmer, with his knowledge of engineering and efficiency, would have had to parade his alleged grievances before an authority much less sympathetic for adjustment.—l am, etc., Muggins. Puketi, March 8.
