IMPORTED HONEY.
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN (From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, January 25. The recommendation of the standing committee set up by the British Government under the Merchandise Marks Act, that all honey imported into Great Britain shall be marked with an indicaetion of origin, should give satisfaction to Now Zealand honey producers. This recommendation means that the word “ Empire ” or “ Foreign ” must be affixed in the case of honey derived entirely from countries within the Empire, or from foreign countries; (hi there i must be a definite indication of all countries of origin of the honey, forming a blend; or (c) the words “Blended Imported ’’ must bo used. New Zealand (represented by the High Commissioner) and Messrs A. J. Mills and Company (representing the New Zealand Honey Producers’ Board) was one of the strongest supporters of the application for the marking of all imported honey. It might be mentioned that Now Zealand finds that its chief competition comes from a brand of imported roney which purports to be of Empire origin, but which is largely American. This fact was disclosed during the taking of the evidence. Sir James Parr, with the stpong co-operation of Messrs A. J. Mills and Company, put forth the utmost efforts to have the full merits of the 'lew Zealand honey fully placed before the committee, and urged that the New Zealand producers had much to gain from the proposals which would protect their interests on the Home market. The last number of the Scottish Beekeeper, in an article published by Mr Arthur M. Sturgoss, B.Sc., refers to the case presented on behalf of New Zealand, and adds: “ Should the order be granted, it will be largely due to the New Zealand evidence.”
