DROUGHT IN THE NORTH.

WELLINGTON’S FORESIGHT.

NO NEED FOR RESTRICTIONS

(Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, February 2.

Despite the position at Mangahao in regard to water Wellington city is carrying ahead as usual. No restrictions have been placed on the use of electric power, nor have requests been made that economica should be practised. The position has not so far been discussed by the City Council, but the stand taken is that Wellington had the foresight to install an expensive plant to meet just such an emergency as the present one, and is now reaping the benefit. Furthermore, that having gone to expense of providing against trouble, revenue must not be allowed to drop. A DRY JANUARY. (Per United Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., February 2. The rainfall in Palmerston North for January was two points—the lowest for January since the records have been taken during the past 15 years, the next lowest January being in 1922, when 120 points were registered.

(Per Unite: Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, February 2. January in Christchurch was the driest month for years. Rain fell only on five days, and the total was 1.489 in.

POSITION IN AUCKLAND. ,

SERIOUS MILK SHORTAGE THREATENED.

(Special to Daily I’imes.j AUCKLAND, February 2.

A serious shortage in Auckland’s milk supply is threatened unless a break occurs shortly in the exceptionally dry weather now being experienced throughout the province. The position is rapidly becoming - acute, and there is every possibility that the retail price of milk will shortly be further increased to a quart. Supplies sent to distributing firms by dairy farmers are dwindling daily, and it is feared if conditions do not materially improve within the next few weeks stringent measures will have to be taken toward regulating retail sales. One leading firm of retailers with many branches will be forced to limit its sale of cream during the coming week-end, and it is certain that many household demands will have to be curtailed.
