SOUTH OTAGO.

BALCLUTHA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, February 2. A meeting of the Balclutha Primary School Committee last night was attended by Messrs Cormack (chairman), Guest, -i£gie, Culbert, Lyall, and the Rev. Hedley White, three members being absent. The report of the headmaster (Mr T. Begg) stated that the school had reopened with an attendance of 378, the drop in the attendance being due to the excellent pass of a large Standard VI last December, but the deficiency would gradually bo overcome by the enrolment of the little ones. He submitted a statement of the receipts and expenditure for the prize money collected last December, showing a credit balance of £3 12s 3d, in addition to the proceeds of the break-up concert—a very satisfactory result for the committee’s funds. Since last meeting of the committee a very successful sports meeting had been held on the sports ground. A part of the playground had been top-dressed during the summer vacation, and he trusted the committee would now proceed with the portion that had been set aside for the infants’ playground. During the vacation some necessary repairs were carried out. The signboards presented by the Otago Motor Club arrived at the beginning of December, and he trusted the committee would take steps to erect them.

The work of erecting the signboards was delegated to the Works Committee.

The janitor (Mr James Porter) wrote

resigning his position.—Before accepting, it was decided that the chairman and the secretary interview the janitor. Considerable discussion took place on the subject of holding a “ Bring and Buy Fair ” in order to clear off the debt, largely a legacy from previous committees, and it was decided that the preliminary steps be taken by calling a meeting of parents in a fortnight.
