STUDENTS’ FEES.

SCHEDULE OF INCREASES. OTAGO UNIVERSITY SCALE REVISED. IDENTICAL WITH OTHER CENTRES. Ja Dec-enL' , 1927, the Otago Universil:- Council adopted - new scale of fees, sub set to approval by the other New Zealand colleges. Notice of agreement has now been received, and the revised scale come: into operation immediately. It shows increases of varying amounts in practically every department, although the fixed annual college fee has been reduced from £2 10s to £1 Is. The alteration in the scale arose out of a conference of representatives from the four New Zealand colleges which took place in Wellington in November last, it is due to the fact that all colleges have been meeting with considerable financial difficulty for some time, and there has been practically no increase in the fees since pre-war years. It was also felt desirable that the fees for each of the four colleges should be put on the same basis. This decision related particularly to arts and science courses, but after haying revised these scales to bring them into line with the other centres the registrar of the Ota-o University (Mr H- Chapman) and Dr Inglis looked into the whole position, and submitted tim schedule which has now been adopted. The new scale is as follow COLLEGE FEES. College Fee.--Each student shall pay-a college foe of £1 Is per annum, unless his total tuitior fees do n ° t ll e ? cee 1 d f . -«, os ’ in which case the fee shall be 10s 6d. Exempted Students.—Each fully exempted student shall pay a fee of £3 5 , and each partially exempted student shall pav a fee of 10s 6d for each subject in which he is granted exemption. Arts and Science. —B.A. and “Recourses: (1) With the exception of the classes below-mentioned, for each arts subject at each grade a student shall pay a fee of £5 ss. , , ... ' r 'or the following classes the fees shall be- —Frencl phonetics, £1 15s; German science reading, £2 12s 6d; history of philosophy, £2 12s 6d; education diploma course, £3 10s. , , . „ . With the exceptions set out below tor each experimental science subject a student shall pay as follows:—Stages 1, 11. and 111. £8 8s a subject; for geology, stage I, £6 6s; for anthropology, £5 ss. M.A. and M.So. Courses.—ln respect of arts subjects the fees shall be as follows: Honours in single subject, £7 7s a subject; two languages as single honours group, £lO 10s subject; double honours, £7 7s a subject. In respect of experimental science subjects the fees shall be £lO 10s a subject „^ T _ T , TT , MEDICINE. In the intermediate course the scale shall be the same as in science, viz.: Biology, £8 8s; chemistry, £8 8s; organic chemistry (taken separately), £2 2s; physics, £8 Bs. . ... - „ In considering the fees for the proiessional subjects other calendars were consulted It- appears that the total tees payable by various universities, including examination fees, are as follows:—Otago, £231 19s 6d; Sydney, £296 16s; Melbourne, £246 19s 6d; Edinburgh (five years), £248; Manchester, £2BB 3s. . It is pointed out, however, that in Otago the examination and diploma fees (payable to the University of New Zealand) are much heavier than in any other case, amounting to £42. as against Sydney (the next heaviest) £2O. The class fees are, therefore, low in comparison. For the second, third, fourth, and fifth years a composite fee of £45 per annum (in addition to college fee) will be charged, payable in two instalments at the beginning of the autumn and winter terms respectively. The fees for the sixth year will remain unchanged. The total fees for the course payable to the University of Otago will amount to £2lB 17s, and, including fees payable to the University of New Zealand, to £2OO 17s. Students taking odd courses shall pay the fees as at present prescribed, plus one-fourth, and a full scale will be prepared. . , , . In considering the medical fees it is worthy of note that the faculty recommended an increase of 33 1-3 per cent. DENTISTRY. The faculty recommended that the fees of dental students should not be increased, but that certain anomalies should be removed. The following scale is therefore adopted:— First year— B.D.S. Diploma. Chemistry .... £8 8 0 £440 Physics 880 440 Mechanical dentistry 10 10 0 10 10 0 Dental mechanics, lectures .... 4 4 0 4 4 0 College fee .... 1 1 0 110 Second year 35 0 0 30 0 0 Third year 35 0 0 30 0 0 Fourth year .... 35 0 0 30 0 0 Fifth year— Clinical dental surgery 4 10 0 4 10 0 College fee .... 10 6 10 6 Students taking odd courses shall pay fees at the rates prescribed at present. LAW. The following increases have been made:— Present fee. New fee. £l4O £1 15 0 2 8 0 3 10 0 3 10 0 5 5 0 COMMERCE. It is not considered desirable to raise the fees in this faculty to any great extent, since the classes have to compete with correspondence schools. _ The following increases have been decided upon:— Present fee. New fee. £4 4 0 £5 0 0 280 3 0 0 3 3 0- 4 0 0 14 0 1 10 0 1 13 0 22 0 HOME SCIENCE. The fees in - this faculty are already adequate, and it is not desirable that they should be increased. They will remain as at present for the first year degree course, except in chemistry and physics, which will be charged as for science students, and a composite fee will be charged for the remaining years of the degree course, and for each year of the diploma course as follows: Degree. Diploma. Year 1 £3O 0 0 Year 2 £3O 0 0 30 0 0 Year 3 30 0 0 30 0 0 Year 4 30 0 0 Odd courses should be charged for according to existing scale. MINING. The following fees will be charged in the first year:—Chemistry. £8 8s; physics, £8 8s; mathematics, £5 ss; geology, £6 6s; drawing, £3 10s. For each of the remaining years a composite fee of £3l 10s will be charged. Students taking odd courses will pay the present fees plus tie-fourth, and a scale will be prepared. MUSIC.
