DEATH OF EARL HAIG

Heart disease was the cause. —A. and N.Z. Cable. Earl Haig, who was 66 years of age, succeeded V iscount French m chief command of the British forces in France in December 1916. He was made a fieldmarshal on January 1, 1917, and Kmgnt of the Thistle in July. He received the Military Medal from * ranee after the brilliant advance in August, 1918, and was commander-in-chief of the forces in Great Britain for some months in 1919, being accorded a fine welcome on driving through London. In 1919 he received the Order of Merit and an earldom, with a giant of £IOO,OOO. He was keenly interested in the welfare of officers and exscrvicemen. A son and heir was born to Sir Douglas in March, 1918, to whom the King was godfather.
