THE MARYLEBONE TEAM. MATCH AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA. (Frees Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.) CAPETOWN, January 28. (Received Jan. 29, at 5.5 p.m.) At Johannesburg the Marylebone team commenced a match against South Africa. Following are the scores: MARYLEBONE. First Innings. Holmes, b Bissett ... 1 Sutcliffe, Ibw, b Hall 37 Tyldesley, Ibw, b Bissett 42 Hammond, c Cameron, b Hall 28 Wyatt, c Cameron, b Hall 58 Stevens, c Vintcent, b Hall 14 Astill, c Hall, b Bissett 3 Peebles, not out 19 Staples, not out 24 Extras 7 Seven wickets for 235 The weather was fine. Deane won the toss, and sent England in on a fast wicket. There was a sensation before the game had gone far, Holmes being beaten by a good ball from Bissett in the second over. Sutcliffe and Tyldesley played a dour, defensive game against good bowling, and at the luncheon adjournment the score was one for 67. When play was resumed excellent bowling and fielding kept the runs down. Sutcliffe was obviously surprised at the decision when he was given out leg before, and it appeared rather as if he had hit the ball. The tail wagged with a vengeance, Peebles defying all attempts to dislodge him. His passive resistance amused the crowd, and, with Staples, he played out time.—A. and N.Z. Cable. SHEFFIELD SHIELD MATCH. VICTORIA v. NEW SOUTH WALES. SYDNEY, January 29. (Received Jan. 29, at 5.5 p.m.) In the Sheffield Shield cricket match Victoria in their first innings made 422 (Woodful 94, Hendry 138, Ryder 106, Scaife not out 35). Gregory took four for 81, Nicholls two for 103, and Mailey three for 128. The weather was fine and the wicket good. The Victorians batted carefully against strong bowling and keen fielding. Woodful played a fine fighting innings, and his partnership with Hendry added 192 to the score. When Ryder joined Hendry runs came more freely. Ryder, in particular, tackling everything sent down. Gregory’s bowling was wonderfully good and fast, and he kept a splendid length throughout. A thunderstorm caused a cessation of play before New South Wales were able to bat.
