WAIKOUAITI SHOW.

GOOD DISPLAY OF HORSES. SHEEP AND CATTLE POOR. LACK OF COMPETITION. The annual summer show of the Waikouaiti Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held on Saturday in perfect weather. The attendance was not large, and the entries in several classes showed a marked decrease compared with those of last year. The schedule was a comprehensive one, and the committee, under the direction of the secretary (Mr J. W. Timmins), was kept busy all day with the programme of events. There was noticeable at the show a feature which is slowly killing small country exhibitions. This is the sole exhibitor class, of which there were many on Saturday. An exhibitor had merely to send in entries to collect several pounds in prize money, although no other stock were entered in opposition. This did not apply to classes only, but, in several instances, to whole sections, particularly those for purebred sheep and cattle. Committees would be advised to put some check on the number of prizes granted to competitors who have no rivals. Also, judges ■ might exercise their privilege of withholding awards where merit was not apparent. This was done in one case by the heavy horse judge, but only in respect of an award which carried no prize money.

The sheep pens were a good example of the lack of competition. In the Boeder Leicester classes Mr J. Chisholm had things, all his cwn way, and Messrs Ireland Bros, occupied a similar position in the Romney pens. Mr J. A. Payne exhibited the only six Corrieclales entered, and divided the honours with Messrs Ireland Bros, in Southdowns, the total entry being two rams and a ewe. In the crossbred classes the exhibitors were Messrs Chisholm, Ireland Bros, and B. W. Fell. The same exhibitors supplied the fat sheep entry. There was not anything outstanding in the purebred classes, but some excellent sheep were to be found among the crossbreds. The fat sheep were in good condition, and well-grox \ but the lambs were not up to the standard of production usually expected from this district. Messrs Ireland Bros, won the cup for most points in sheep classes. The three recognised dairy breeds were represented by some splendid types of milkers and breeders, but the competition was very weak. A notable absentee from the Friesian section was Mr T. Hewitt (Goodwood), who strained his heart during the week, and is at present laid aside by illness. Mr D. Wright met no opposition in the Jersey classes, and won all the prizes. The Ayrshire breed, which has earned a wide popularity in the Waihemo and Waikouaiti Counties, was represented by consignments from the sheds of Messrs M. A. Tubman and D. and G. Reid, the latter being the more successful.

The Hampden breeders, Messrs Nicolr C ?% Br^ a ,? d Wossrs J - A - Payne and M Cailum, were responsible for the display of black and whites. The points prize went to Hampden. A handful of crossbred milkers and purebred dairy cattle completed the entry. Mr J. M'Grath was prominent among the exhibitors of draught horses, securing a groat many class awards and dividing the championship awards with Mrs Bannatyno. Mr H. M'Grath also won the trophy for most points. The display of heavy horses was a good one. Naturally the entries were not in the best of condition at this time of the year but the female classes produced some fine types. The wet mares and yearling fillies were splendid classes. The champion mare, exhibited by Mrs Bannatyne, was an unusually welldeveloped and typical Clydesdale. Competition was fairly keen throughout this section, and the class awards were distributed better than in any other section. There wore some handy and useful types of workers shown in the classes for two, three and four horse teams. In the light horse section competition was also keen. There were some very good ponies, and plenty of good quality hacks. Mr W. H, Hastie’s Mystery was again to the fore in this section and later in competition. This animal has acquitted himself well at shows all over Otago this season, and has more prize money to his credit than any horse in Otago and Southland. The pony championship wont to Mr Ivan Miller, with Mr D. Ross reserve, the latter also winning the points trophy; In the hackney classes Misses Gleenslade and Statham (Dunedin), Miss Nicholls (Maheno) and Messrs C. T. M'Callum and G. Pryde wore prominent prize-winners. The hack championship was won by Miss Nicholls, with Miss Greenslade reserve. Miss Nicholls won the points prize. The home industries section was judged by Mrs J. Nyhon (Sandymount) who described the display as one of outstanding quality. Mrs J. W. Timmins won the prize for most points in baking and Mrs D. Walker won the points prize for dairy produce. After the judging of the baking section, which included a class for the best prepared school child’s lunch, Dr Champtaloup {the Otago Education Board’s medical officer) gave an address on children’s diet. The competitions programme was a good one, and attracted a lot of attention. Mr W. Hastie’s Mystery won the jumping contest and also the High Jump and the Hunting Competition. Miss Greenslade won the Ladies’ Jumping Competition. A new competition this year was the judging of fat lambs. Competitors were asked to select the best types from 10 fat lambs, and at the same time indicate any second-grade stuff that might be included. The idea was to encourage farmers to learn how to draft their own lambs. The competition was very popular. The following is the prize list:—CATTLE. AYRSHIRES. Judge: Mr James M'Gregor (Dunedin).
