RHEUMATIC DISEASES

RAVAGES AMONG WORKERS. BRITISH RED CROSS CLINICS. (British Official Wireless.) (Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright.) RUGBY, January 26. (Received Jan. 27, at 5.5 p.rn.) As the first step in a scheme for providing similar institutions in all the large industrial centres, the British Red Cross Society, with the support of the Health Ministry, is establishing in London a new clinic for treating rheumatism. Nearly one-sixth of industrial invalidity in Britain is caused by rheumatic diseases, which cost the country nearly £2,000,000 annually in sick benefit payments, apart from the wastage involved in lost working time. The general idea is to bring treatment within the reach of the workers, thus enabling them to remain employed during treatment. The clinics for rheumatism opened in London by the Red Cross during the war are still doing valuable work, treating 20,000 patients annually. Trade union and friendly societies are showing a practical interest in the scheme.
