WANAKA NOTES.

(From Oue Own Correspondent.) PEMBROKE, January 26. ANGLING. Anglers on Lake Wanaka have been fairly successful during the past week and several parties have enjoyed good fishing in the Makarora: River, and near the head of the lake., Among the most successful was Mr J. H. Meek, of Dunedin, whose best bag was 10 fish taken in four hours —three brown trout, one rainbow, and six salmon, the last-named averaging 2£lb. Sir J.M'Farland, the Rev. D. Stewart, and Mr T. Gilkison secured eight trout all of the rainbow variety, the heaviest weighing 61b. In one day’s trolling Mr Russell J. Colman, of Norwich, England, secured seven salmon and rainbow trout. DESTRUCTION OF KEAS. The suggested destruction of keas on the Mount Cook Reserve and in the National Park, ha s come to an abrupt and so far as the Mount Cook Reserve is concerned, unexpected end; while runholders all over the country were being taxed to pav for the destruction of these birds in order that the high country flocks might be protected, the folly of maintaining sanctuaries where keas could multiply in peace was fully realised. Late and successful efforts by the Lake County Council resulted in permission to shoot oyer these sanctuaries being granted, and Messrs Robertson and Collins were selected to carry on the work. Both men are skilled high-country climbers and fuUytehab.eOn their arrival at Mount _ Cook they wore, they state, refused permission by Mr Wigley to destroy keas there, and so t-ey returned to their homes. Further action is being taken.
