SWIMMING.

NATIONAL CARNIVAL CONCLUDED. YALDHURST SHIELD TO CANTER- • BURY. CALDER RETAINS DIVING TITLE. After providing a week of such swimming as has never before been witnessed in Dunedin, the New Zealand swimming carnival came to a conclusion last night, and, as on the previous nights, standing room only was the order at the Municipal B Se finals of the men’s and ladies’ diving championships were undoubtedly the star attractions of the session, and each dive was watched with the keenest interest. In the men’s event it was expected that the holder of the title, R. Calder, would be to the fore, despite the fact that he lost heavily in the first heat through slipping off the board. Walker and Hicks, both ex-champions, had also been diving well, and speculation was rife as to who among these three would eventually take premier honours. That doughty pair, Calder and Walker, however, soon put all doubts at rest by giving -a beautifully clean display and taking first and second places respectively. Hicks, although his voluntary dives were not so difficult as those undertaken by the Otago man, also gave a good exhibition. Miss L. Hood hud no difficulty in retaining her title,- her diving being uniformly excellent. Miss D. Foote, the runner-up, also dived well, but as yet she is somewhat lacking in competition experience. The result ol the 440yds ladies’ championship occasioned no surprise, and Miss K. Miller again proved that she is a champion by clipping 32seo off Miss Gwitha Shand’s record. Lindsay also added to his already long list of records, and returned the splendid time of smin 28 l-sscc for the 440yds championship. His swim was altogether an amazing effort, as can be judged by the fact that he won comfortably by 25 yards from Stokes, has team mate, who is by no means slow over the distance. The flying squadron race was a great tussle, and Cameron (Wellington), Lindsay (Canterbury), and Fairgray (Auckland), the final swimmers for their teams, fought out a thrilling 100 yards which will long remain in the memory of those who saw it. Cameron had an advantage of two yards in taking over, and although he was vigorously challenged by the Canterbury man over the first two laps, he finally drew away to win by three yards. During the evening Miss E. Stockley made an attempt on her own 100 metres backstroke record of Imin 27 4-osec, which she established on Wednesday night, and, paced by L. J. Moorehouse, she succeeded in lowering it by 1 2-ssec. Canterbury took the Yaldhurst Shield with 50 points, and Otago was runner-up. The War Memorial Shield, for most wins in junior and intermediate events, went to Wellington. Results;— 440 YARDS MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP. Holder of title: D. P. Lindsay (Canterbury). The first 100 was covered in 63sec and the 200yds in 2min 21sec, by which time Lindsay was 6yds ahead of the rest, who were still together. At the 220yds M'Lean dropped back 2yds from Claridge and Stokes, both of whom were swimming well, but could make no impression on the leader.
