ENGLISH TEAM AT AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND REPRESENTATIVES BEATEN. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 25. There was a large gathering on the Devonport Croquet Club’g green to welcome the English players. Replying to u speech by the Mayor, Sir Francis Wemyss, the captain, said that an interchange of visits would assist in drawing the Empire more closely together. Cf all factors none was more important than friendly rivalry on the field of sport. The visiting team played an exhibition game. Subsequently, the visitors played the Auckland representatives at the Mount Eden Green, where they had an easy win. They displayed line knowledge and skill, and the general impression i s that they will he hard to boat in New Zealand, and that they should do well at the Now Zealand championship meeting. Sir Francis Wemyss and Miss Steel defeated Mr s Fullerton and Mis s Woelman, 26 to 8; Lieutenant-colonel Du Prc and Miss Rclallack defeated Mrs Schnauer and Mr R. Lawrence, 26 to 4; Sir F. \yemyss and Miss Steel defeated Mrs Hilton and Mrs Lowe, 26 to 3. The game between Colonel Du Pre and Miss Rclallack against Mrs Airey and Lawrence was unfinished, but the visitors were leading by 22 to 2. The visitors left to-night for Wanganui to take part in the North Island tournament. NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. (Per United Press Association.) WANGANUI, January 26. The North Island croquet championship tournament was opened to-day in glorious weather. Competitors are present from all parts of the Dominion. Results; Ladies' Championship (first Len Watkin boat Mrs M'Dougal; Mr s R. Watkins beat Mrs Fulton; Mrs E. A, Johnson beat Mrs Leech: Mrs Pitcaithly beat Mr s Cowling; Mrs Jarvie beat Mrs Walling" Jones. Handicap Singles.—Mr Caughlcy beat Mrs Brabant; Colonel Savillo beat Mrs Ball ; Mrs Co'utts beat Mrs Ballingall. The English party of croquet players will arrive tomorrow.
