At Los Angeles thousands of people endeavoured to gain admission at the opening of the Hickman trial. Hickman, haggard and cringing, pleaded insanity. His counsel objected to trial by a judge on the grounds of prejudice, after which the judge held a recess court for the purpose of deciding whether to continue the trial. —A. and N.Z. Cable ACCUSED AND HIS COUNSEL. THREATENED BY HUGE CROWDS'. NEW YORK, January 25. (Received Jan. 26, at 10 p.m.) When the Hickman case came on to-day huge crowds gathered the Hall of Justice and threatened the accused man and his counsel. After the judge had announced that tie would assign the case to another court in an effort to satisfy those who charged him with being prejudiced, the police took additional precautions to guard Hickman against lynching.—A. and N.Z.
