EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board was begun yesterday, and was attended by Messra J. Wallace (chairman), J. Horn, M.P., J- Smith, D. I'. Fleming, J. Mitchell, J. H. Wilkinson, P. MTvinlay, R. H. Todd, L.Sanderso.i, and G. Livingstone. The Balclutha Committee applied for a subsidy for repairing and t-opdressing asphalt at an estimated cost of £3O. Granted. An application by the teacher for genera! renovations to the interior of the residence at Ida Valley was granted. The Otago Central Electric Power Board was granted permission to run an electric power line across the corner of the school property at Lowburn. The architect was authorised to make what repairs he considered necessary at the residence at Stirling. The application of the Allanton Committee for a stove for the junior room was granted. The Port Molyneux Committee reported That the school residence Tad been destroyed by fire on the morning of Friday last.—The chairman and the local members were appointed a committee to conduct an inquiry. A petition was received from 28 householders of the Clydevale district asking that the school be removed to a more central position. The petitioners suggested a site in the vicinity of the cross roads near the sale yards.—lt was decided that Mr Smith should confer with the School Committee. Tlie Glenomaru Committee asked that, in view of the appointment of another married teacher, the board again consider the matter of the removal of the residence to a less isolated position.—lt was decided to apply to the Education Department, asking for a grant for the erection of a four-roomed residence.

Parents of the Gladbrook >ettlement asked through the Strath-Taieri Com mittee that the board arrange for conveyance service for their children. There were 14 children of school age.— The secretary was instructed to confer with the settlers concerned and ask their opinion as to the best means of arranging a conveyance. The IVlosgiel Committee asked for the remodelling of the school at an early date. —The secretary was instructed to reply that the matter would be considered In due course. It was decided to install electric light in the residence at Otiake on the usual terms. The Education Department Intimated that it had made a grant for the addition of a third room at North-East Harbour, and for the remodelling of one of the existing rooms. It also asked the board to consider the possibility of subdividing and selling five or six acres of the existing school glebe and using part of the proceeds to fill in the swampy area at the foot of the slope.—The architect was asked for a report on the department’s suggestion. In regard to asphalting subsidies, advice was received from the Education Depart, ment that for schools with an average attendance of 25 and below a limit of £ls subsidy had been fixed, and that for schools with an average of -between 26 and 50 the limit was £2O. With the board’s and committee’s contributions this would give totals of £45 and £6O respectively. In the case of a school with an average attendance under 50 the department would not now insist on the board’s certificate that a tennis court was not involved.—The Secretary stated that this was the result of representations made by the Otago Board.
