BOWLING:

A progressive pairs tournament was played on the Pheenix green yesterday, members o£ the Pheenix, Meadovvbunk, Awamoa, and Pukeuri Clubs taking part. Of the skips, Bastings, Bradshaw', Crisp, and Blacklock each won five out of the six games and divided the stake. Of the leads, Stringer, D. Reed. Carrad, Ralph, and Evans won four each and also divided the stake, Iho green was in excellent order and a most enjoyable day was spent by the bowlers. TRIP TO HERMITAGE. A large party of Oamaru residents who had made the trip by motor bus to the Mount Cook Hermitage, returned to their homes last evening. The weather was fine throughout the trip, and the party enjoyed the alpine tour immensely. BIBLE CLASS CAMPS. The Church of Christ Young Men’s Bible class went into camp at Glencoe on Saturday under the charge of Pastor J. Watt. The young men broke camp last eventing after a most profitable outing. t A number of members of St. Luke s Bible classes went into camp at Waikpuaiti yesterday in grounds placed at their disposal by the Rev. W. Jamieson. They are under the charge of the Rev. W. Foster, and will spend a week in camp. HOLIDAY FISHING. Oamaru anglers had very successful sport during the Christmas holidays. A number of excellent baskets was secured from the Waitaki River, and at Lake Ohau some fine rainbow trout were taken. Good catches of trevalli have also been made in the Oamaru harbour. WOOL SHED DESTROYED. The woolslied owned by Mr J. Pringle, a well-known settler of Kauru Hdl, was destroyed by firo on Monday night, togather with several bales of wool. .Between 60 and 70 sheep, which were in thp yard waiting to be shorn are also reportea to have been lost. How the fire originated is a mystery, but it is presumed that somebody had thrown down a . bgfitod match during the day. Mr Pringle is a heavy loser.

ENFIELD SUNDAY SCHOOL,

, Too Enfield Union Sunday School held its fifty-second anniversary on Sunday. Tne Rev. G. P. Stotkwcll preached in the morning, the Von. Archdeacon Russell in mo afternoon, and the Rev. George Wallace at night to good congregations in uiu public hall. The special singing by tho scholars was much enjoyed and the services were of a hearty character. ,'Jtt Monday night the annual tea and concert were held. A very old friend in the pelson of Mr Joseph' Williams presided and an enjoyable programme of musical ana elocutionary items was rendered by the scholars. Little Marjorie Yuill after giving a speech of welcome wavea her magic wauj over the assembly that filled tho hall and thereafter everything went well. There were carols, dialogues, recitations and action songs. Two of these Shopping ” and '“The Christmas Star vyero excellent, and the largo audience showed its appreciation of the efforts of the juveniles. Tho prizes were distributed by the Kcv. G. Wallace and addresses of congratulation nut devoid of humour were given uy tho Vcu. Archdeacon Russell and the xvev. G. F. Stockwoll. A good report of the year’s work was read by Mr T. Common and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to all who had helped in tho anniversary. During the evening a presentation of a handsome bedroom clock was rnadetoMr Macdonald, the indefatigable supeimtet U out and gratification was expressed at mi return to health. A cricket match between North Otago and South Canterbury was commenced at Timaru on Monday, and’continued yesterday, resulting in a win for South Canterbury by an innings and 97 runs. The home side won the toss, and on a last wicket, and with conditions favouring the batsmen, compiled the respectable total of 312. Angland and Mason opened tor South Canterbury, the latter being clean bowled by Inder when he had scored 1/. When Harding and Angland became associated the score mounted rapidly. Haitiing was fun out at 37, and Angland fell to a catch by Brooker off Inder after scoring 52. Kane gave a bright display for 82, and Herdman played forceful cricket for 74 not out. The remaining wickets fell cheaply. M’Donald, four wickets for 61, and Inder, two for .0, were the most successful bowlers. Fraser, J.P., a first offender was convicted and discharged on a cnarge oi drunkenness. LAWN TENNIS TOURNAMENT. The North Otago lawn tennis tournament was continued yesterday at the Oamaru and Awamoa courts in pertect weather. The semi-finals of the mens and ladies’ championships and the nna.s of the latter proved very interesting, and the play was, in most of the games, of a high standard.
