The financial prosperity of Paris depends to a greater extent upon tne foreigner than does the welfare of other great city of the world. 1 1, j are thousands of hotels, restaurants, “ curio ” shops, post-card vendors, and tourist agencies which live upon the tourist. Tin; famous exclusive shops of the Avenue de TOpera and the Rue de la Paix have one French customer to five or more Americans. Indeed, it is rather uncommon for the American buyer to encounter a native in these shops. There is hardly a fine shop in Paris which does not advertise “ English snokea here.’’
