THE JAPANESE DIET
OPENED BY THE EMPEROR. GREATEST POMP FOR YEARS. (Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright.) TOKIO, December 26. Following the year’s mourning for the late ruler, ending on Sunday, the _Emperor in person opened the Diet, driving in the greatest pomp for many years through the streets gay with New Year decorations ; but cleared of all people, except at intersections. For the first time in many years the Emperor personally read the Royal Message, while the gold-emblazoned State coaches superseded automobiles, adding brilliancy to the parade. The message rejoiced that foreign relations were on a footing of ever-increasing friendship.— Sydney Sun Cable.
