A STEAMER ON FIRE

(Received Dec. 25, at 5.5 p.m.) The steamer Clan Mac William is on fire in Nos. 1 and 2 holds at Vavau, in the Tongan Group. Her cargo consists ol about 3000 tons of copra. There arc no lical fire-fighting appliances.—A. arid N.Z. Cable. CAPTAIN AND ENGINEER DROWNED. STEAMER A TOTAL LOSS. SUVA, December 26. (Received Dec. 26, at 8.20 p.m.) The Clan steamer, Clan M‘William, which caught fire at Vavau, Tonga, on Saturday, is a total loss. Captain W. Thompson and the engineer were drowned. The vessel was completing copra loading for Home. —A. and N.Z. Cable.
