BOXING. FAIRHALL DEFEATS TROWERN. (Frees Association—By Telegraph—fiopyright.) SYDNEY, December 24. Fairhall (9.8) outpointed Trowern (10.3). The New Zealander forced the pace from the start, straining desperately to secure a knock-out, which he almost achieved’ in the third round with a right tp the plexus, the bell saving the Australian, who boxed skilfully, evading the New Zealander’s wild rushes. The first of the croquet test matches between England and New South Wales was commenced in fine weather. The visitors outclassed the State players. Miss Steel beat F. Stone (New South Wales), 26—11 and 26-24; Windsor Richards (England) beat A. E. Tavles, 26—14 and 26—1; Colonel Dupre (England) beat Mrs Moore, 26—3 and 26-^-4. The game between Miss Retaillack (England) and Mrs Tayles, 9—3, is unfinished. THE CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT. (Pee United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, December 26. The ChVistmas croquet tournament was opened at the United courts at Hagley Park to-day. It is riot a New Zealand championship tourney, but it attracts many of the best players in the country, and this year there are 150 entries as against 100 last year. The Villiers Stakes resulted;—Zmika, 7.3, 1; Lady Buckinbar, V. 3,2; Donnioon, 8.6, 5. There were 12 starters, and it was a great finish between the placed horses. Won by a head, with Donmoon half a length away. Time, Imin 37scc—a record for the race. JOCKEY CLUB’S SUMMER MEETING. (Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, December 26. (Received Dec. 26, at 10 p.m.) The Australian Jockey Club’s summer meeting was continued in fine, cool weather. The going was good. Following are the results: December Stakes.—Elizabeth's March, 8.12, 1; Black Douglas, 8.10, 2; Gold Tinge 8.5 and Golden Music 8.7 (dead heat), 3. Eight started. Won by a half-length. Time, 59sec. Summer Cup.—Vitality, 8.6, 1; Tibbie, 7.13, 2; Resource, 7.10, 3. Fourteen started. Vitality took charge entering the straight, and won after a hard finish by half a length, with thiee-qnartera of a length separating second and third. Time, 2m in 44sec. The final scores were;—Australia 119. New Zealand 60. Tasmania 41 defeated New Zealand (Goldwater, A. Short, M’Gregor, Eagleton) 11; Victoria 27 defeated New Zealand (Farrow, Rudd, Stone, Clark) 14; New South Wales 28 defeated New Zealand (Watson, Drummond, Piper, Hobday) 13; West Australia 23 defeated New Zealand (Hunt, Rowe, Casey, Hills) 22. The New Zealanders expressed the opinion that the Windsor green is the keenest they have played on. THE, THIRD TEST MATCH. NEW ZEALAND DEFEATED. (Press Association—B*- Telegraph—Copyright.) MELBOURNE, December 25. (Received Dec. 25, at 5.5 p.m.) The third test match was plaved at Caulfield Park in sultry weather, and Australia defeated New Zealand by 121 ta 77. The rinks were the same as yesterday for Australia and New Zealand. The New Zealand performance was considered creditable in view of the representation, and it is hoped that the tour will be the forerunner of biannual fixtures. Hot weather made the greens very keen, which militated against New Zealand’s prospects. Following are the scores;—West Australia 31 defeated New. (Received Dec. 26, at 10 p.m.) Fifteen swimmers took part in the annual swim across Paris in the River Seine, in the middle nf which the current was very strong and swept nearly all the swimmers below the landing points, five being brought to the shore in boats.
