ASHBURTON TROTTING CLUB. CUP WON BY PLUTO, (Special to Dailt Times.) ASHBURTON, December 26. The summer meeting of the Ashburton Trotting Club was held to-day in perfect conditions, the sun being strongly in evidence. As usual, there was a large holi<lay attendance, and some excellent sport ■was witnessed. The track provided exceptionally fast goinp, all the placed horses improving considerably on their handicap marks. The totalisator investments were £20,256 10s, compared with £21,239 10s last year. A little further on Doris Pointer and Aleron drew away five furlongs from home, and in a good finish Doris Pointer won by half a length. Lassiter was joined at the six-fur-long post by Fanlight, with Kempton and Bon Elect handy. Kempton took charge a little further on, and led Fanlight and Bon Elect to the straight. Fanlight was on terms with the leader when he broke 100yds from the post, leaving Kempton to win by two lengths from Bon Elect, who beat Fanlight by a length, with Gold Digger, Brent Boy, and Greywood next. After foing half a mile Harold Burwood joined ’luto in the lead, with Acre, Huon Denver, High Jinks, Pan Yan, and Daphne de Oro handy. They ran without much change for the next five furlongs, but Harold Burwood then dropped out. Daphne de Oro was in second place four lengths behind Pluto half a mile from home, with Acre, High Jinks, and Pan Yan next. Pan Yan then moved up, and followed the .two leaders to the straight. Pluto easily held his place, and won by four lengths from Pan Yan, who beat Daphne de Oro by two lengths, with" High Jinks close up and Kotuku Jack next. A little further on Native Queen joined Okoura, and the pair led Jean M’Elwyn and Native Queen to the straight, where Kulnine and Wee Gus handy. Kulnine took charge little further on, and won easily by three lengths from Jean M’Elwyn, who beat Wee Gus by a neck. Vestas, who finished fast, was close up, just in front of Native Queen. A mix-up occurred at thk stage. Tennis falling and bringing down Satin Princess, Sadie Huon, Jackie Audubon, and Bay Nut. At the mile post Theckla Boy had a lead of several lengths, while Erin’s Royal was closing up. Theckla Boy easily held his place, and won by six lengths from Erin’s Royal, who took second place at the entrance to the straight. Perfect weather was experienced for the Gore Trotting Club’s meeting on the Gore racecourse. There was a large attendance, and the, track wa s m excellent order, fast times being registered. Ihe fields’were .large throughout, and some splendid racing was witnessed. J-t 'vas a bad day for the punters, only two favourites winning. The starting was carried out by the club s honorary official, Mr F. Wallis, sen., who did splendid woik at the barrier. Mr W. Norman attended as stipendiary steward, and inquired into a few trivial matters. Th.e principal race, the Gore Trotting Club Handicap, provided a fine finish between the backmarkers Lingfield and Jolly Pet, the former gaining the verdict by half a length. . A feature of the meeting was the success of the veteran Mr S. G. Inder. A mishap occurred after the start ot the Christmas Handicap. Goldmine (D. Hussey) came down, Slump (S. iodd) and Lee Bingen (M’Kewen, jun.) going over him. The riders escaped, hut Leo Bingen was destroyed. An inquiry into alleged boring by Goldmine was investigated, but no action was taken. h The totalisator handled £18,916 10s, compared with £17,640 10s for the correj spending day last year.
