A TORRENTIAL DOWNPOUR.
HAWERA DISTRICT DRENCHED. NO SERIOUS DAMAGE REPORTED. (Per United Press Association.) HAWERA, December 23. Following a brief thunderstorm which commenced at 11.30 a.m. a torrential downpour, almost tropical in density, drenched the Hawera district to-day. During the space of two hours almost 2in of rain fell. The fall is considered to he the heaviest experienced for many years. Several of the principal thoroughfares in Hawera were inundated. The flood waters leached a depth of 9in over the middle portion of the main street for a distance of 100yds. No serious damage has been reported. The rain ceased shortly before 2 o’clock.
